The great uniter.....

From The Economic Times.

"On the other hand, exports to countries other than the US experienced a significant uptick, rising by 24.8 per cent, the second-largest monthly increase on record.

Notable increases included crude oil shipments to the Netherlands and Hong Kong, gold exports to Britain, and other items to Germany."

The same article goes on to state that overall exports are marginally down, 0.02%, and imports are down 1.5%

Also from same;

"Stephen Brown, deputy chief North America economist at Capital Economics, noted that while tariffs impacted trade, strong demand from other countries helped reduce the effects. However, he cautioned that "it is unlikely that exporters can continue to rely on other countries to offset weaker demand from the US."

I'm not in denial or delusional, for all the "happy days are here again" rhetoric coming out of Ottawa via the gov't paid for news organs. 0.02% is not a significant number.............yet. As pointed out Canada's other trading partners cannot be counted on to pick up the slack long term. The EU deal with the US should tell you exactly where Canada is on the pecking order as far as trade goes.

My major concern about the future is based on the fact that people don't like bullies. Right now, the US is acting like a bully and demanding that the rest of the world do what we say. Or else.

Of course that or else is us is basically acting like a child and taking our ball and going home if they don't want to play our game. Eventually the world will tire of it and then we're stuck unless we can become fully independent.

Fully independent would mean we no longer need their trade but as soon as they realize that, we're fucked because we have no more leverage.

There's hope. Trump will lay the groundwork but it will be up to people like JD Vance to see it through. Vance isn't Trump, he's softer and more agreeable politically, so there's a possibility that once Trump is out of office the world will pull its collective heads out of its collective asses and understand their choices more clearly than they do now.

In that, leaders like Starmer and Carney are just cutting their own throats and taking their respective countries down with them. Hopefully the people in Canada and the UK understand this and don't play along.

Trump is just being Trump. It all goes back to the "Art of the Deal." He opens with outrageous statements/demands and then negotiates down to rational. The international community is accustomed to playing these long, drawn out, negotiations and Trump isn't going to play that game. Look at the nations that have already reached deals. It turns out that the terms really aren't that bad. Then there are those few that want to posture and bluster. They're doing it for local consumption because they aren't doing so well with their citizens and that huffing and puffing is going to make them appear 'in charge.' They're essentially nothing more than Nicolas Maduro's with a good vocabulary and knowing which fork to use at a formal dinner.

You admit that Trump is “basically acting like a child” and “eventually the world will tire of it and then we’re stuck”.

But then you pretend it’s the rest of the world that has its collective head up its ass? And “Starmer and Carney are just cutting their own throats”?

A sane person would correctly identify the Petulant Man-Baby as the problem, not the people who don’t capitulate to his tantrums.

Damn straight up true! I stopped to fix a bit to eat, or I could have written this... but not as short. I'd have chewed Arphy's ass some more. Thanks for this. ;) :coffee:
