All of them knew plenty of gay men serving alongside them, well before the current "don't ask, don't tell" era. Not a one cared. If a person is serving their country, especially during war (WWII and Vietnam), sexuality is just not an issue.

Exactly.

I was in the Navy, and many of the best sailors I served with were gay or bi-sexual. Probably even more than I knew about. Not once did it ever become an issue.
