Prologue
February 14th, 2313
Dear Diary,
I'm scared. Mom says that this is what has to be done, that our people are in danger. The Chinese government is too powerful, she says, we have to run. I know that she is right, but our reaction is so... so alien... I mean, to leave the earth? To live on this ship, for my entire life? For my children to live out their lives?
No one talks about it, but a lot of people think we won't make it, to this planet, GH 47234. But even as they are doubting, they are determined to make it work. This ship has never been tested. It is, quite literally, a shot in the dark. But they don't want to believe that. I don't want to believe that. It's been a week. You can barely see Earth anymore. I almost started crying when I couldn't find it, before a nice boy showed me. He said he knew my sadness, but that we had to be strong.
The others have started to call our destination something, something almost mystical to them. Prometheus, they claim, will be a paradise.
A new beginning.
The Forerunner Contention
January 10th, 10457 by the Julian calender, 1845 by the Promethean. Civilizations have risen and fallen. All knowledge of earth, lost. For twenty generations the travelers hurtled through the stars, and their landing was not gentle. Struggling to survive in a lush, but foreign environment, they scattered across the globe and developed independently, rediscovering things that would be hailed as commonplace back on Earth.
Viviane Vash glared at the pretentious facade of the Academy. She hated this place. Apperently there was something terribly important happening today, otherwise she would have stayed at her dig site. The bloody ancient Jafi's are waiting... She had worked hard to get that coveted assignment, and somewhat resented being pulled away. Noisy motorcars rumbled down the cobbled streets, the towering gothic clock tower chiming two o'clock.
Right on time. The young archeologist began her way up the unnecessarily lengthy flight of steps, and into the magnificent stone building. The place was abuzz with activity, archeologists old and young chattering excitedly about their meeting, speculating on what it was to be about. Her brethren had always been terrible gossips.
As expected, Viviane looked quite out of place. She had dressed the same as she had any other day on the site. A pair of brown leather pants, a tanktop, and scuffed knee-high boots. Her hair, white as snow, was pulled into a simple ponytail. The rest of them, eager to please their superiors, Fucking desk jockeys... had dressed in their usual finery.
Slowly, the mass moved toward the lecture hall, and she followed suit. Thats when she saw him. Bloody hell! It was Mac, the man who had only just beaten her for valedictorian, and perhaps more importantly, her former lover. He hadn't noticed her, thank the gods... He looked handsome despite his feeble attempt at matching his colleagues dress code. Viv smiled, and doubted he even had the necessary attire in his wardrobe.
Sitting near the back of the lecture hall, she watched those that followed her file in. It was not long before the light dimmed and the spotlights on the podium lit up.
As he spoke, a normally attentative Viviane found her eyes drawn back to Mac, sitting to the left of the podium. He hadn't lost any of his dashing allure. What had he been up to, these last two years? She had no idea. They had not spoken, even by telegram...
Cursing, she returned to the speaker.
"... And here is the object of interest. An item with circuitry so complex, we have not even begun to understand it. There are many buttons upon the front, and some have suggested that these were once labeled by the letters of an alphabet. It could be an advanced typewriter, or storage device. Without further adieu, I present to you, the Jurgenson device!
Jurgenson... She grinned. How like him to name it after himself. Regardless, the description was intriguing. As the speaker held it up to the crowd, its finer features were revealed.
It appeared to be made of stainless steel, although time had certainly put its stainless qualities to the test. Dented in several places, it had many buttons as he had said. The labels, if there ever were any, had long since worn away. Above the buttons was an empty rectangular depression of mysterious purpose. Strange silver lines decorated the bottom of the depression. It could have been a kind of display... But there was no way to tell. The mind blowing part of the exhibition was that nothing like it had ever been found. Who was capable of such a thing? Whatever it was, Viviane wanted to be the one who would find them...
