Grace James walked up to the front desk of Avery Wealth Management. The pretty receptionist looked up from her computer screen and asked happily,

"Can I help you?"

"I'm here for an interview with Sir George Avery."

"Oh right," the receptionist replied, her tone becoming more business like. "Please take a seat. Someone will be with you shortly."

Grace sat down in one of the plush leather armchairs in the reception area and looked around while she waited. Avery Wealth Management reeked of money and you could hardly fail to notice that. As one of the more exclusive personal investment specialists, one that was only available to high net worth individuals, they had an image to maintain.

It hadn't been the money that had attracted Grace to the position of live-in Personal Assistant to its chairman and chief exec, Sir George Avery however, although the salary for the job was generous. No, it was more the opportunity of a fresh start.

If you’d have asked her a year ago whether she’d be interested in being a live in P.A. she’d have laughed, but that had been before her life had imploded. Back then she’d had a good job as P.A. to a senior director in a FTSE100 company. She had a dockland apartment which she’d bought with her boyfriend and life has been good.

Then, one evening, at a two day off site company seminar she’d had a little too much to drink and ended up having a threesome with two good looking guys from marketing. Grace had never done anything like that before and the sex had blown her mind, but it had come at high price. One of the guys she’d slept with had bragged about it and within a week she’d been offered voluntary redundancy to go quietly or face a disciplinary proceeding for gross misconduct. She'd had no choice but to tell her boyfriend and within a month they’d broken up. They tried to sell their apartment but couldn’t, so were still living together, and to make matters worse Grace couldn’t get another senior P.A. job. It was as if she’d been blackballed.

She had no choice but to take temporary work, well below what she was capable of, just to come up with her share of the mortgage payment but then one day almost a year after that fateful night she’d received a call from a recruitment agency offering her a job. At first they didn’t say who the job was for but explained that it would be a live in role to a wealthy individual who worked in the city. It would involve three days in London and four at his estate in the Cotswolds. She would have her own quarters at both locations and it seemed like the answer to Grace’s prayers. She could finally move out of the apartment she shared with her ex yet still pay the mortgage until they could sell it.

The first interview was with the recruitment consultant and it had seemed to go well. Then she got a call back for a second interview, and at this stage they informed her that the employer would be Sir George Avery. Grace googled everything she could about him. He was a distinguished looking man who had built the company up from nothing and had been knighted for his services to various charities. She knew he was sixty because he’d just had a lavish party at his Cotswold estate, behind closed doors. She learned all she could about Avery wealth management but apart from the little she’d manage to glean she couldn’t find much about Sir George.

After five minutes another pretty young thing walked up to her and announced.

“Sir George will see you now. Please follow me.”

Grace knew she probably wasn't the only applicant they'd be interviewing but she was determined to get the job.
