The next themed contest is:

Earth Day (April 22)
themes: nature appreciation, outdoors, etc.
starts: March 25
closes: April 13
winners announced: April 19

This thread is to encourage those who are considering participation; to commiserate with those whose Muses won't play; to castigate trolls and to provide a platform to celebrate our achievements.

Earth Day is not always an easy theme to follow.

Get down and dirty! Show Nature in the raw...

Go for it.

Does Nut Nailing Trolls, drowning them in WATER, burning them with FIRE, freezing their balls off with SNOW and burying them alive in the EARTH count?

nooooooooooooooooooooo

it's too soon...
it's not even enough time to recover from the whip-lash

weird, i thought "how to" was next (which i hate) :p

Apologies to those who think it is too soon, but story ideas are already being discussed for Earth Day on another forum. I think Earth Day is the hardest contest of the year so we need plenty of time to prepare for it.

And No. How-to is AFTER Earth Day:

How-To
themes: advice and instruction (must be submitted in the "How-To" category)
starts: May 1
closes: May 22
winners announced: May 29

I'm sorry, Og
I was kind of kidding...!

Asks in very small voice so as not to look like a total dill: What's "Earth Day"?

Hmmm...Naked Lesbian Mud Wrestling or Aluminum Recycling? That'll be a tough choice.

I might actually try something for this one, maybe even a story written while not rolling on the floor laughing.

Unlikely, but that is my plan.

Earth day is the day the environmentalists love to see brush fires that burn down 5 million dollar homes........ I love nature...... save the spoted owl and put 30,000 lumberjacks out of work...... save a fucking minnow, and scrap the irrigation of their needed water for farmers

I just love Earth day.

Starrkers, you total dill.

What is "Earth Day" you ask? It's another excuse for a Lit writing contest where we get to dream up stories about folks getting it on amid the splendors of nature, that's what it is. Of course, there's also a lot of ecological, tree-hugging, nature-loving bilge.

The story goes that Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson after a trip he took to Santa Barbara right after that horrific oil spill off our coast in 1969. He was so outraged by what he saw that he went back to Washington and passed a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth."

The United Nations celebrates Earth Day each year on the vernal equinox (around March 21). On February 26, 1971, UN Secretary-General U Thant signed a proclamation to that effect. At the moment of the equinox, it is traditional to observe the day by ringing the Japanese Peace Bell, a bell donated by Japan to the United Nations.

For a more jaundiced view of the occasion, re-read garbage can's post.

It's natural for you not to know what Earth Day is, living down under as you do; it is a strictly American holiday--a day of celebration and observance, as opposed to the kind where you can get off work--which was begun in the 70s. 1971? I was out of the country myself, I think. It celebrates stewardship of the earth, nature, growth and regrowth and stuff like that.

It's never too soon to start working on a new contest! It's kind of like holidays in the retail world--as soon as the Christmas is over, it's time to get out the valentine displays. I'm working on a story myself. It's going pretty well except there's a sticky part in the middle.

Thank yee, folks.
Sounds like an amalgam of several "Days" we have - "Clean Up Australia" Day in late March, "National Tree Day" in July where people are encouraged to plant trees. There's others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

So, for this contest, does it have to be set around a certain date and type of activity, or is any environmentally friendly pursuit acceptable?

I've never been quite sure. I guess I should ask. I'm thinking that maybe it doesn't have to take place on Earth Day itself, because the one I entered last year is set in the 30s, when Earth Day hadn't been invented yet.

I believe the boundaries are wide open in this contest..similar to your outback...any thing to do with the outdoors is passable....sex while gardening, sex while pruning hedges, sex while camping or hiking...etc...I think you get the idea...if I were going to enter, I would write an non-erotic tale of whales...

Whales can be erotic. Your smaller whales, like dolphins, are mutually attractive the year 'round; they do it face to face, and sometimes they have group sex. Also, they don't always confine their approaches to other dolphins. There used to be--I don't know if it's there anymore--a website devoted to explaining how one might safely have sex with a dolphin. But wait--we don't have the Extreme category anymore---

Tony, with all due respect . . .

You're weird. :D

Well, it wasn't going to be erotic...I just have this seed of an idea of writing as whales....

There's another way?

Oh boy, another contest. Another 3 stories to write (puff--puff).

Earth Day, huh? Reminds me of some grafitti I saw in a Ladies Room one time (don't ask).

"Hooray, hooray, it's the first of May.
Outdoor fucking starts today."

(Okay, a buddy of mine owned a restaurant and we were cleaning the bathrooms after the place closed) :D
