The Earth Day 2011 Contest Support Thread

I’m not sure yet if I’ll be entering the LITEROTICA portion of the EARTH DAY Contest (although I’m definitely going to have an entry in the A.I.R. portion of the contest). We’ll see.

As for those who’ve never entered the EARTH DAY Contest and are wondering what’s required here’s my take on the contest:

1) It’s the easiest contest to win because it invariably has the smallest number of entries (lets all hope ralphie is reading this).

2) Content isn’t important – as with all of these themed LITEROTICA contests the authorities DO NOT disqualify stories that have nothing to do with the theme.

3) Cheating is rampant in this contest (one author, I won’t mention db’s name, enters the same story every year) and often the fair QUEEN rewards her lackeys in this contest because there’s so little interest in it.

For those looking for inspiration let me suggest the following entry from the 2009 EARTH DAY Contrst – its been read by over 200,000 LITEROTICA readers and has amassed over 1250 votes and 50 comments. I think you just might enjoy it…

Good luck to everyone writing for the upcoming contest!!!

I must say (if such a newbie as I may be permitted to offer advice!) that if you are planning on entering with your first ever Lit story, it is EXTREMELY WISE to post a non-contest entry as well if you have one, or to devote some time to an unfinished story as well!

This past contest I joined and submitted hastily, and have since realize what an opportunity I wasted to get some of my other stories in front of readers. Unfortunately, between classes and other things, I wasn't able to complete anything else in time.

A minor point to be sure, and please don't let it PREVENT you from entering - just something to keep in mind if you think you might want to continue writing! ;)

Best of luck everyone!!! (PS - I'm sorry DG, but every time I hear / read Lumberjack I can't help but picture Michael Palin in a buffalo check shirt singing about how he's okay lol xD)

And when you're nauseated/groaning in pain two paragraphs in, let me say what's on your mind with my spoof of his "masterpiece" -- LST3K Ep. 11: Earth Duh

Thanks for the responses, I'm intersted in joining this contest.

And just to reiterate the original post, contest stories do recieve more votes than normal, for the people who are thinking about joining.

Not very inspiring for me, because I had to beg to get enough votes to even qualify. (sadface) That means I'll probably normally be lucky to get ten votes.

I'll be entering this one. It's just treehugger stuff, right? I have another excellent won't-be-popular-because-it's-not-typical-fappy-fap-fap-fic-stuff plot idea! I hope to have it done and ready to enter by the start so maybe I'll get a few more votes.

Heh heh heh.

If all goes well, it'll be steampunk BDSM porn. And you guys will just have to wait until March to find out how the hell I'm making THAT fit the Earth Day theme. (Very easily.)

(plants a tree)

Noira: Each contest gains you more readers and more votes! The first contest I didn't qualify either. Well, I qualified until the sweeps and then I was swept 1 vote away from qualification. Take heart! OHhh I can't WAIT to read your story idea! I have friends that will love to read it too.

Sillypanda: I did that this time around with my shifter story; posted it simultaneously with the contest entry. It did help!

I also just started a Blog! :)

I'd like to enter this one but it seems so...nebulous or something. Hard to get a hold on what to write about. Hmmm. I might have to do that funny thing called research.

Or I could work on some stuff I already have started which would probably be better all around.

Ahhh, brings back memories of winning the coming in last contest, if I remember correctly. :)

I don't even have a chance after placing in this contest for two years in a row. There won't be an occupied bridge on the planet as soon as the trolls see it post :p Already one drooling and gnawing at the bit up the page, there.

I've at least managed to move forward from where I was when it stalled as a V-Day story, and the Earth Day angle is actually easier to work with. The climax remains the same, except it's on a different day. Everything in the Wood universe is nature related anyway, no matter what time of year I write about.

Oh, it's okay. I'm taking heart all right... the only reason I'm entering these contests is because I'm in the Survivor contest and that's five more points right there!

Otherwise I NEVER would've written a Valentine's day story. :D

I'm not a popular writer yet but hopefully by the end of the year I'll have a bit more notority.

You should give this one a go: http://www.literotica.com/s/lst3k-ep-06-witch-season

It's a fan favorite, only one Lit page, and actually the highest rated of the series as well. Totally ridiculous story, and I was on my game with that one.
Egads, that was... (dying) Oh man the source material is terrible. Terrible enough that I'd daresay whoever wrote it knew what they were doing, to create such a monster of a story. It reeks of self-awareness.

Terribly funny.

I actually get a lot of these ( and come across many more ) When people write sex in a fantasy setting for the first time, there's a good chance that something like this is going to result.

Well, maybe not quite this bad...

The sex just ends up replacing the magic sword, gem, or whatever other widget would normally be the key to victory over the bad guys.

It's taking exactly what you know from mainstream fantasy and directly translating it to sex. They all end up a bit campy, but some can be fairly arousing despite that, and a few are even pretty good.

My experience from talking to the people donating these stories is that they had absolutely no idea how awful they were at the time of writing them. They were serious efforts, and it's only by the luck of being too embarrassed to let anyone see their dirty writing that they had the time to reflect and realize just how bad the stories really are.

Hell, I dug up a story off an ancient computer that I wrote and invited Flutterbug to riff it with me for Ep. 02, just to prove that I can take what I'm dishing out. My old stuff was just as campy and gawd-awful as anybody else's *laugh*

How much I've improved is up for debate :p

Hmmm... Earth Day support thread onto the second page? No no no. This needs a bit of a bump, even if it is early. Or I need to change my page defaults. One or the other.

I'm in. And I'll say that now so that I can't abandon my effort in a few weeks, like I did with my Valentine's story when it hit 15,000 words and got completely out of control.

My goals: getting less wordy, and making my characters less angsty. Because no one likes wordy, angsty characters. :D

So just to be clear, "Earth Day" in a Lit story can be whatever you want it to be right? (within reason of course)

I'm referencing it as a day where people celebrate nature by having naked exploits there.

"Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment." ~ Wikipedia

So environmental movements or protests that end in shag-fests, bonking in nature reserves, making the beast with two backs with a wood nymph if you want to go all fantasy about it (and look at another of Darkniciad's rip-into-crap-erotica pieces if you want to see how NOT to write a wood nymph story). That sort of thing.

You might want to save the naturism / nudist camp stuff for the Nude Day contest later in the year, though there is quite an overlap.

Or you could hang it all on the word 'earth' in the story and bring in farmers, gardners, archaeologists, soil structure engineers, sewage workers (now THERE's a challenge!).

Heck, could try making it topical and controversial by reducing the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill to a wank romp...

My entries the last two years were about a woman seducing men into trying a more environmentally-friendly diet. If anyone wants to steal that idea this year, feel free. My entry this year will be something different.

I'd like to write a story or two or thirty for the Earth Day contest.

I have an idea or two or thirty.

My focus has shifted to blogging for a minute, so I'm a bit stalled on this one. I was trying to incorporate poetry with prose. It worked for ~Heart's Tempest~, but not sure I'll pull it off again. I think I need another gorgeous day of tree hugging, rock collecting, and bird watching to get the juices going again. But, tomorrow is supposed to be windy and cold again.

We're off!

Laurel has put a sticky about the Earth Day Contest at the top of the Authors' Hangout.

Please read ALL of it if you are thinking of entering. You wouldn't want your story disqualified, would you?

The more the merrier Freddie.

Thank you.

Don't mind me. I'm just here for the story or, in my case, stories.

Creating the characters and writing the story is my prize.

I have to get busy. I only have 11 stories finished. I'm behind schedule if I'm going to beat the 30 stories that I wrote for the Valentine's Day contest.

Besides, if nothing else, writing so many stories pisses off Scouries.
