When I was in my teens, I worked summers as a gandy dancer. It was the hardest fucking labor I ever did.
Part of the job required cutting rail. As dumb as I was at the time, even I knew better than to cut rail that wasn't lying firmly on the ground.

A band-aid being applied to a bridge just outside of Fairbanks.
Says the AKDOT, "Our bridge maintenance crew lifted one end of the bridge by about two feet to its original elevation. The bridge has been slowly sinking down into the bog for a while now, but the crew beefed up the supports and leveled it out so Goldstream commuters can have a *slightly* less bumpy ride into town, at least for permafrost country. This isn't a permanent fix--we'll need a new bridge for that---"
