I decided to put my welding work to the test and subjected it to a series of test. Now I don’t think you will find my testing methods in the AISC 13th Edition, but if they tested this kind of stuff I am sure it would have passes! And if not at least my wife enjoyed the "testing".

We did weld testing this week and the guys were jokeing about testing my "expandiable hanger rod" ( it was the best thing I could come up with at the time). I took a pass and did not subject it to that kind of testing.

We woulda welded it one piece in the shop and shipped it ready to hoist..you know, just to save the ironworker time on site

OK, get some 2" standard schedule 40 pipe . It comes in 21' lengths (sp?)
About 4 bucks a foot. Get it threaded on end on the legs and 2 ends on the top rail. Have a welding shop weld up a set of couplings into the end configuration to screw em together.Couple hours work. Weld some loops on the top rail to hang the swings from. Buy the swings and chain.
Paint it up nice. $500 to $600 that way

Anybody got ne thing to add?

When the kid grows out of it, you can sell the pipe

Don't use cast threaded fittings. Use steel. If in doubt, they should be stamped A105 to designate that they are indeed, forged steel.

And don't forget to anchor the legs to the ground.

When my kids were in elementary school, we (the PTA) raised some funds for some new playground stuff and it was remarkably overpriced. I could have had custom stainless steel stuff fabricated in town for what we ended up paying. Of course, the school district wouldn't hear of custom fabbed stuff. It had to come from 'approved' suppliers.

So the boss says go out to the shop and make a stamp for this job we are working on. Not a big deal just a little stamp to put some 45deg bends in a ¼ x 2 bar. I designed it, pulled the steel, cut it, welded it, grinded it and testes it and the guys used it to make about 100 of these little things. Everything was going good till about 3pm when my face started to feel flush. Cantankerous old shit could have warned me about getting a sun burn (weld burn maybe?).

So now I want to know how the hell do you welders keep from getting burned all the time because this sucks!

When I am TIG welding the light stuff I put sunscreen on my arms and just wear a tshirt.

Be very careful about burning the testes.
