The Construction Thread

Hood and leathers.

When I am TIG welding the light stuff I put sunscreen on my arms and just wear a tshirt.

Be very careful about burning the testes.

Hell I had on a hood but I will be damed if my face did not get good and red. Oh well I guess I will chalk this one up to the learning experience.

The arc is reflecting off of the work surface or possibly another welder near you is flash burning your face inside your hood.

When welding really hot stuff you can put a beard on your hood, but it does not seem like what you were describing should be that hot. They sell leather pieces that attach to the bottom of the hood. Duct tape and a piece of old welding glove work just as good. Most leathers have collars that can snap up around your neck.

Skin cancer sucks so prevent flash burn whenever you can.

Done the cancer thing once and yes it sucks.

It amazing how much damage just a short time under that hood can cause.

I will have to hit the Praxair cat and find something like the small flap that hangs down on a goalie mask or something.

 Hey you!!

It falls into the don't fry bacon naked category.
Hi, sweets!

Yeah, a friend of mine used an industrial steam iron while topless. I told her that it was entirely her fault that the poor company now has to add a scorched nipple warning to the user instructions.

Experience?

Figure out the problem and fix it.......

you don't want it to happen again.....

Someone's in BIG trouble.

JUNEAU - McGraw Custom Construction out of Sitka may lose an $11.4 million contract to build Juneau's Downtown Transportation Center because a notice of a last minute bid reduction got to the city 32 seconds too late.

When city officials openened the bids of four contractors Tuesday, McGraw was the apparent low bidder for the project thanks to the reduction. Contract Administrator Jennifer Mannix of the city's engineering department explained the new development in a city memo:

"A Bid Modification Form was received by fax from McGraw Custom Construction at 2:00:32 p.m. on May 12, 2009. This Bid Modification has been determined to be late and has not been accepted."

The deadline was 2 p.m. The lowest bidder now is local contractor Coogan Construction at $11.5 million. The contract award goes before Juneau Assembly for approval Monday.

An extra five minutes never hurt anybody.

I feel like sending them a watch. With a second hand. :D

I'm glad Coogan got the job. We did a big residential roofing job (12- 4 plexes) for McGraw and Chuck, the owner, is a real jerk to work with. Plus, Coogan donates lots of money and time for our local youth sports programs.

Call them everyday 32 seconds before they open and 32 seconds after they close.

"How is business?"

McGraw doesn't have the best reputation.

Still the 4 bids were pretty close for a project of this magnitude:

$11,475,000
$11,586,000
$11,690,000
$11,805,000

Less than 3% from the high to low.

Late is Late
Closed is Closed

If I was second, I would be pissed if they took the late price. Hell, I would send in another lower price. Let them say..no, its too late now:rolleyes::D

I was talking about the contractor giving it a little extra time, not the gov.

Rules are rules. Love 'em or leave 'em. And all the rest of those sayings.

According to the radio, this was the first time that the clock's second had has ever been used when receiving bids. In other words, this is the first time that a bid has ever been so close to the submitting time. Or whatever the hell I'm trying to say.

Only a dumbass waits for the last second. That would make McGraw a.........
