the Authors’ Hangout LITEROTICA/A.I.R. 2012-2015 Themed Contests Support Thread…

I'm beginning to think the way to win a contest is to post late, post in a catagory that is NOT popular, get as few votes and comments as possible and stay under the radar. Am I close?

If by 'radar' you mean escaping notice by the scurvy one, yep, that's the major thing.

If winning a contest is your goal, this site, like any that leaves the judging to the entire membership, will likely disappoint you. If you enter a contest to see how you stack up with other authors and glean what constructive help you can get, then it is a worthwhile effort. Again, to get 'constructive' help, avoid Literotica's #1 ignored author.

As long as you get and keep the minimum 25 votes, a sweep is likely to affect your score far more than a story that has attracted hundreds of votes. But the sweep might reduce the votes below 25 and make the story ineligible, or reduce the rating significantly.

If a story is high-rated from the start it could attract more than its fair share of low votes.

Dave don’t listen to them. They don’t know what they’re talking about. One’s a condiment ALT and the other guy has Alzheimer’s…

Basically what you surmised is essentially correct. The two most popular categories on the site (LW and Incest), the two categories that generate the most votes, views, comments, favorites, etc., etc. never win themed contests in the LITEROTICA section of the contest even though the results are supposedly decided by our readers.

However you should also add the following to things you have to do to win:
1) Suck up to every AHer over 60 years old (just about all of them)…
2) Never offer a suggestion on how the contests could be improved… and
3) Insult me at least once a week…

If you do all these things they may allow you to win a contest sometime in the next 10 years.

Sexy Summer is cumming…

Hey Dave, another trick to winning a contest is actually entering one.

Ask scouries who has the most to say about the contest where his entry is.

OK, the next contest I'll enter a story in incest, LW and Sci/fi. Probably the sci-fi entry will have 25 votes but may have the best score, even though it will suck!

You can do what you want, but me personally I will always take my best shot and not cater to "formulas" and strategies.

I'm an incest author for the most part, but my three contest entries have been in different categories because I'm trying to stretch as a writer and contests are a great way to get more looks than if you simply debuted in a category.

I'm competitive and want to win as bad as anyone else, but I'd rather finish low with "my story" than go with what I think will work.

P.S. if you write a shitty sci-fi story you won't win. Sci-fi readers know what they like. They just don't go 5 happy like a couple of other categories here do.

Going into the last night, I would like to wish Shychiwriter good luck.

I am not a sci-fi fan, but enjoyed their entry.

Beyond that, their incest series The Afflicted is one of if not the best series I've read here. "Shy" is a phenomenal author and I can't see anyone(except the resident dickhead) finding fault with them winning/placing.

I made this post over a year ago. It summarizes the suggestions I’d made even farther back. And you know what? I still like most of these proposals… FROM APRIL 2011:

http://www.capta6.org/images/suggestions1.jpg

Here are a few more suggestions I made a long, long while ago (some date back 3 or 4 or 5 years). It lists proposed changes for the THEMED CONTEST system. I still like a lot of these ideas!

-More specific themes (Summer Lovin’ for crying out loud)
-Rotating and/or changing themes from year to year (Nude Day ran its course years ago)
-Limit on entries an author can make
-Raising vote thresholds (to a minimum of 100 to start)
-Prohibit Sci-Fi stories
-Use the “category correction coefficient” when comparing scores from different categories ( a la A.I.R.)
-Insist that the voting and comments buttons must be turned on
-Category specific contests from time to time
-Word limit restrictions sometimes (2-4000 words one time, 5-8,000 another etc.)
-An active rejection of stories that don’t meet minimum theme requirements
-The banning of the infamous toady and backstabber darkboy from all contests and contest threads until 2015
-Vote transparency – sweep away the sweeps
-Rename that disgusting Non Human category Bestiality so that our innocent readers are forewarned
-Have a maximum age for contributing authors (I think 60 would be a good cut off point)
-Adopt the A.I.R. system of awarding prizes (most votes, views, comments, highest rating, best story)
-Appoint a contest moderator who will address and answer complaints and suggestions publicly
-Insist on minimum erotic content
-Charge a token amount (perhaps $10) for every contest entry
-Identify ALT entrants by tying the story to all LIT names the contributor uses
-Give a course on what constitutes a chaptered story, a serial story, etc.(perhaps the Jayman can give it)

And that’s just for a start… you should hear me when I get going…

Pretty big wish list there, Jimmie.

I just don't like that one about the age restriction. We aren't dead, yet, ya know.;)

I don't really like any of his ideas, but some are worse than others, such as the age restrictions and the category restrictions. The main problem wojld be that people with thousands of alts, such as scroungy, would vote that many times , all fives, and leave that many comments and favorite himself that many times.

I don't like the idea of raising vote threshholds either. I have one story, in the Celeb category, that only received 23 votes. It wouldn't have won anyhow, because the score is only about 4.30. I also entered a novella and an EC story, and neither of them reached 100 votes either.

If you'll notice, everything on his list favors him and his incest category, which is the only category he writes in. If it doesn't favor him, it knocks out the competition, which is more or less the idea of it all.

Why A.I.R. exists…

LITEROTICA vs. A.I.R.!

Makes the A.I.R. results look pretty good doesn't it?

Why A.I.R. exists…

For all the NEWBIES around:

A.I.R does nor exist. It is a fake group made up of scouries and only scouries for scouries and only scouries.

He is the self-proclaimed number one author on Lit. but he has never won a contest. he has never placed in a contest. Not even a monthly contest. So the way to fix that is to make up your own contest and declare yourself a winner. Yes, he is a multiple time winner of his own contest.

Since he is comparing a fake contest to a real one.... The rest of his post is all bullshit, smoke and mirrors.

Okay, okay! I'll up the age limit to 65 for you ... But the author still has to be breathing. In return I expect you to get on board with the other 19 suggestions. And hey, seeing you're here maybe you can explain to us all how all of these suggestions just help the authhors of incest category stories. Start with these ten:

-More specific themes (Summer Lovin’ for crying out loud)
-Rotating and/or changing themes from year to year (Nude Day ran its course years ago)
-Limit on entries an author can make
-Insist that the voting and comments buttons must be turned on

Say what you want but he makes perfect sense!!!! The winning stories are the least read stories in the contest? Hmmmmm....just saying. It would appear that certain individuals have figured the system out

Dave, I'd like you to take a look through my lists of stories. They're linked in my signature as the images that say "Darkniciad" and "Les Lumens"

You might notice that there's a fairly regular pattern. The bulk of my stories are in Sci-Fi&Fantasy. Many of them that aren't in that category also feature supernatural elements. The reason for that is that it's my preferred genre.

If you blink through some of the stories, you'll see that the bulk of them are also quite long, all the way back to my first story six years ago being 22 chapters that were mostly around 7 Lit pages. I write long stories.

I'm sorry, but writing what I always write and have always written isn't "figuring the system out", it's just writing what I want to write.

So, should I be forced to write outside my preferred categories and lengths in order to participate in contests? Why?

If you look through the lists of the others who have won, you'll find the same thing.

Forget the money one. That ain't gonna happen.

But, how about a contest, such as the Valentine Contest, only had romantic stories, or only had erotic couplings, etc. That way the readers can compare apples to apples. Let the Halloween contest only have sci-fi stories.

I would like to see word limits. Who the Hell has time to read a book, and if you are really into reading it, you don't have time to read all of the other entries.

I agree that all of the stories should have some sort of erotic content, even if it just implied.

How'd I do?

Hardly any of that is gonna happen, and I believe most of, maybe all of it, should not.

The age limit is silly. I admit, even a maximum of 65 would disqualify me, but even if that were not the case, I would say the same thing. What does age have to do with writing ability, besides the fact that most writers improve with age.

I also don't like the category limitations. What's wrong with writing an essay on the origin of Valentine's Day or a celeb. story or anything else? Last year I wrote a very nice Celeb story about Mary Ann's valentine from Gilligan. It didn't win, but was well received and is still on the hot list.

As for length, a story that is too long will not atteact many readers, and will get fewer votes because of it. As long as the story is the minimum length, I say let it go.

What's wrong with Erotic Horror or Non-Human on Halloween?

Why would an essay or a How-to not be elibible to win, wven if it was not erotic?

One thing I would favor would be removing the Earth Day contest and replacing it with Spring Break, which is much more sex and party oriented.

A.I.R. Summer luvin...

We'd just like to advise all authors who are planning on entering the SUMMER LOVING CONTEST that, unlike LITEROTICA, A.I.R. awards prizes based on their popularity with our reading public.

I can guarantee you that the least read story will not win our prizes. darkboy strategies are not acceptable here.
