The Aussie Arvo Chat Thread

Will some lovely nice Aussie teach me some common Australian slang? I'm fascinated with Linguistics and know a lot of British slang, but sadly, no Aussie.

I think I have a teatowel with common sayings:
sheila = girl
tinny = can of beer OR a small aluminium boat - must be very careful about context when saying 'I sank a tinny' ;)
dunny = toilet

will have to dig it out.

my favourite would have to be "root" its is an australian slang expression meaning to "fuck" as in "wanna root" "im rooted"...for years anytime I see on american tv some someone exclaiming Im rooting for the team etc it brings a smile to my face.

Another commonly used slang is "seppie" its the shortened version of "septic tank"..which in turn is the slang for Yank..it also applies because most Australians think Americans are full of shit.( A septic tank is a large underground tank for the collection of faeces ..aka shit..when the property is not connected to the main sewer line)

you also may see "pmsl" in Australian online chat it is an acroynym for "pissing my self laughing" commononly used in the same context as LMAO

hope that helps

Whenever you look for great Aussie slang I always think the best resources are books like 'Let's Talk Strine' and the works of Barry Humphries a.k.a. Bazza McKenzie or Les Patterson. How can you not love our take on English when an Aussie uses a phrase like "shaking hands with the wife's best friend" or "as full as a Pommy complaint box" lol

agreed most of the best slang is in the similies and metaphores that we use like " flat out like a lizard drinking" "dry as a nuns c***" "happy as nun in a paddock of cucumbers" "mad as a mallee bull" " praying at the porcelein altar"
cant think of any more colourful ones offhand, but im a bit preoccupied multitasking atm im sure it will hit me at some ungodly hour.

Um...wow. That's not nice.

Problem with Aussie slang is that when used between most Australians colloquially we 'get it', whereas to almost everyone else and especially in print forms it just doesn't translate. My favourite anecdote that illustrates this is a supposed moment during the Bodyline test cricket series. Douglas Jardine was upset that one of the Aussie test cricketers called him a bastard, so when he had the next chance he went to the dressing rooms of the Aussies asking for an apology. Bill Woodfull (the captain) then addressed his team mates and said "Which one of you bastards called this bastard a bastard?". :D

That's not what I meant. Did you see the bolded portion? Am I taking this the wrong way? If someone told me I was full of shit I'd take that as an insult, so I don't know if it IS an insult down in Oz or if I'm just using my American brain and my American sense of what's an insult and what's not.

That's just not very nice, if you ask me. "Most Aussies think Americans are full of shit." Like, what?! What did we ever do to ya'll?

Nevermind. *shrugs* It's just kind of insulting to be lumped like that. You know? Ouch.

In Australia ..the more someone makes fun and insults you the more they like you...In regards to thinking americans are full of it.. thats in general what is thought because Americans take themselves SO seriously ...ask the average aussie what they think of Bush, of the clinton-lewinski dramas etc

Australian humour is very hard to define and doesnt translate very well into other cultures expecially those cultures that Like the USA that dont regularly "take the piss out of them selves" translated means Australian dont take themselves too seriously and can and very much do laugh at themselves all the time.

Im sorry if that offended you..but honestly lighten up.

Yes, you are taking it the wrong way. That's because as I and others here from Australia would say our English and our slang is more subtle than what you read on paper or online. What almost everyone else thinks is an insult an Aussie will actually accept or laugh about. If I say to a friend "you wanker" and then say to a stranger "you wanker" they can have two entirely different meanings.

So don't bust a blood vessel about being called a seppo :) And frankly every culture gets tied with labels we don't want (how many times do Americans either mistake us for Austrians, think we're all descended from convicts or believe we're all like Paul Hogan or the Crocodile Hunter); at least Aussies can joke about it.

More classics:

"Talking to God on the big white telephone"
"I'm so unlucky if it was raining virgins I'd be washed down the gutter with a poof"
"As busy as a one armed taxi driver with the crabs"
"As flat out as a one legged man at an arse kicking conference"
"As dry as a dead dingo's donger"
"As tight as a mouse's ear"
"She's got a pair of norks like a set of Mudgee mailbags"

There's literally thousands like this....

they just don't get us... you should here the things i say to my bestest of best friends!!! lol.... and it's kinda like an unwritten rule in my family that we all should swear... it's kinda weird if you don't once you've reached a certain age lol... they'd probably think i'd become a stuck up bitch and thought i was too good for them if i stopped swearing around them.... just the way we are i guess :)
... not that i'm saying ALL aussie families swear... or ALL of us call our besties names...

thats not true, it usually means they actually don't like you.

One of the main ones is 'pissed' - in American, it means angry, in Australian, it means drunk - but when we are angry, we say we are pissed off.

Aussie nurses often use the acronym PFO in their paperwork and reports for the cause of an injury - stands for Pissed and Fell Over.

When someone pisses me off, I go and get pissed (and sometimes fall over :)).

and when someone takes the piss out of me ..its having a joke at my expense

Hi all

It does seem a shame that we are losing the more colourful elements of our language as a more uniform global english encroaches. Having lived in a few parts of Australia through the years I am glad to be back in Melb where I understand all the subtleties and insults based on football teams.

And I think insulting someone is the best way to show them how much you love them.....you bunch of bastards
