This simply isn’t true. Political rivalries are a fantasy that benefit only those who make a living in politics.

The rest are engaging, as fans, in a spectator sport that has little to no real effect on their personal situation.

The idea that they have any influence over political events is just another illusion intended to keep them cheering and donating.
You're limiting you view to the politics of Government. Politics is everywhere, totally pervasive in human life. In fact in all primates. From infancy through to old age, from kindergarten to the old folks home, at school, at work, in clubs and organised hobby and special interest groups. If you'd ever belonged to an amateur repertory group you'd know that politics is not just about government election cycles..
 
Anyone who has been involved in their local PTA, library board, or local township can easily tell you how a few loud voices can wield massive electoral influence on things that actually matter to your school, township, and community. The idea that politics is something that is simply unassailable is only true when discussing the highest levels of government from the perspective of those of us who are regular suburban joes.
