The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

If you're good, you can have a 1 striper running himself ragged, you send an airman over to the tool crib for a chain stretcher then let the tool crib know he's on the way and they'll say "Sure if you'll swing by the Release shop and get me a can of sand paper lubricant" If the kid is eager and close to a promotion, you can get him pinging through every shop in the squadron before he catches on

Oh wonderful.
We had similar tricks: The 'Long wait' was popular at one time, I remember.

Yes, it's a PL-259 plug (the socket is SO-239) and I have a few bits to make up the extension . The tricky bit will be the 'Earth', 'cos it ain't no use using the domestic pipes or the mains earth. I do have a real earth spike outside; it just need connecting. . . .
But I need my coffee.

The 30-06 is a marvelous round but for me, nothing tells the bad guy "You made a bad choice" like a 1 second volley of up to 70 incoming 30mm projectiles. I never got to fire that gun, the Air Force always gave me a lieutenant to get his hands dirty

Morning coffee is ready and I put a pot of tea on for those that prefer the leafy form of beverages

I'm planning to test for my General license in November and get back into HF. I love QRP and that depends on a perfect antenna. Good luck on that rig!

Coffee and donuts. The perfect breakfast. Had some shopping to do early so I thought I'd spurge.

I'm about half way through page five of my work in progress. I expect I'll make it to seven pages. Everything left, except for the last scene, is blocked out. I've had the climax and resolution formulated in general terms since before I started writing it, but I've never had the details down.

I still don't. It's frustrating.

And it's getting darker instead of lighter as the morning goes on. Weather is closing in.

I imagine it also depends on paragraphing and how much dialogue you have.
Maybe. Maybe not.

I asked on the AH a few years ago if anyone had been able to parse out the site's HTML enough to say what the page break criteria was. Someone (I think is was Lupus Dei) answered that he saw something about 20,000 characters.

I tested with several of my stories and found that the page breaks always came at or near the first paragraph break before 20,000 characters. My predictions were never off by more than a paragraph. That's good enough for most purposes, but it may not be good enough for all purposes.

There must be a couple dozen ways to count characters, and different methods give slightly different results. For my purposes, I just use the last paragraph break before 20,000 characters how-ever the word processor counts them, and I haven't been far off -- closer than a word count.

Can someone remind me... is a page on Lit's story layout about 3.5 k words?
Asking for me :)

PL259? Like a VHF antenna?
PL259 is usually HF, but yeah, VHF and UHF on mobile and base units. HP was talking about setting up an antenna connection, he never said what kind of rig he was setting up.

The evening coffee is ready.

A nice rack of baby back ribs hot off the grill with baked beans and baked potatoes.

Today was a research day, more or less.

So I've got 56k characters with spaces.... what I've got is surely more than 3 pages... I suppose I've got plenty of paras so more like 4 pages. It feels like more though somehow... something I'm writing. Thanks
I copied and pasted the first page of the first story linked in your sig into LibreOffice Writer. It tells me that's 19,576 characters, including spaces.

I hope it'

I just came back from the brewery. I hope the coffee pot is a large one.

After my plot bunny idea from Millie in the Halloween thread, I'm on a roll to poke the trolls! I may be a slow writer. But I have a mission as the LW "Troll Poker" (at least until my wife returns from helping out at the brewery and says "Give it a break!)

Troll Poker. Is that like a fireplace poker for beating them to death or something like an alien probe or a card game with idiots wild? Inquiring minds and all that.

The midnight coffee is hot and fresh. I had to slap mine twice to make it stay in the cup.

A PSA - consider a face shield when cooking bacon. Some fat popped in the pan and splattered my left eye. Didn't think much of it until everything stayed blurry.

A trip to emergency and I'm back home with an eye patch and an appointment to see an ophthalmologist tomorrow.

Now, when's talk like a pirate day?

Make sure your bacon is dry, water wise before cooking.

I have an assortment of patches. What have you got in mind? They are right eye patches I'm afraid. Since you need a left then you are out of luck wearing one of mine..

Good luck with the ophthalmologist tomorrow.

I'm headed that way soon myself. I'd already be gone but I have a new story up and I always wait for the first one bomb.

Thanks. I use home cured bacon from a local butcher and this is the first time it's splattered. Caught me completely by surprise.

I have a frying pan with a lid; it's good for keeping the splatter 'in'

Good Luck with the exam. If I can help, let me know.

PL259? Like a VHF antenna?
the PL259 is a standard form of coaxial connector; it's not particularly good and anything over 100MHz (ie., VHF), but it mostly does the job (a BNC or N-type is better). See https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/Pl259-Plug/48704/bn_7023470561

It puts me in mind of a weapon for Chloe to 'supervise' if she ever goes on another Troll hunt.
