The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

Maybe she was worried you didn't hear the first time

I said, maybe she was worried ...
oh forget it :)

I've got a bluetooth KB but I leave it plugged in

Ha ha. Three different user names. Sent a PM to the PTB (powers-that-be).

I like the wirelessness of BT KBs and mice. Saves little accidents with a cord snagging things... like dragging the coffee cup off the desk and into my lap.

Four silly acronyms in a short posting. Am I suddenly in the military or something? Only one TLA, however.

Gawd, I'm struggling getting used to this new keyboard. The old one had an <fn> shift key in the lower left, which was used in conjunction with the cursor keys for large page navigations like page up/down and top/bottom. The new one uses other shift combinations. I didn't realize how much I moved around browser pages like that until this constant tripping over it.

...sigh... I'll adjust. I guess. Count my blessings, I should. Just a few minutes ago I scolded C for licking her finger trying to tap a "button" on her iPad screen that didn't click on repeated tries. I called her "a Luddite."

Despite spending my entire career in tech, I frequently (only half jokingly) call myself a Luddite. Really, I firmly believe that tech for tech's sake is generally bad. New tech needs to prove to me that it is a net positive before I will accept it.

And even very subtle changes in keyboard, spacing or layout, is really hard to adjust to. Of course, once you have paid that cost, you will hate any other keyboard.

Like almost every new car. Gawd, the nanny-tech is out of control. I'm hoping beyond hope the current fleet of old iron makes it past my own "best by" date. Our mechanic thinks that's doable, parts availability notwithstanding.

February. February was when the backyard fences collapsed and we were forced to replace.

September. September is when the replacement fences were installed and finished.

What a nerve-wracking spring and summer. Gawd.

I spent the morning catching up on some chores I postponed so I could watch the votes not roll in on my contest story. Now my back is sore.

I'm finally closing out the last task for one long-term client and sending them their groundwater model. In a regular zip file, it's 1.2 GB of text files. In a 7zip file it's 220 MB. They're going to get the 7zip file.

Another long-term client is still holding on. For them I need to pour over a long legal document and decide whether it really does make unreasonable requirements. I have a hard time believing my late boss would have accepted it the way they think it works. With luck, I'll just be able to give them a good argument why its requirements aren't outlandish, then they can go find a new hydrologist. They promised me they would, but no-one alive now remembers when they had anyone else they depended on.

Am I crazy for wanting to write the scenes where my characters are getting painfully patched up?
It can go with the story. I have a scene where the older MMC goes into a full contact karate tournament and comes out heavily battered and bruised. It leads to some therapeutic gentle fun in a warm spa.

The lawn appreciated what little rain we received and looks green this morning. We may get more rain tonight. I had to go back on the Meloxicam because I couldn't stand the whole-body aches that were just debilitating. I'm feeling better now but I'm still going to see the doctor to discuss the long-term use of the Meloxicam or any alternatives.

I've got a fresh pot of coffee brewing and the teapot is hot. There are snacks on the counter. I scored some more 'Cortland' apples at the farmers market so I'll be making another apple crisp today.

I'll be over in the corner working on my story. I hope I've managed to write myself out of a corner and I'll see if my alternative works. Feel free to stop by and discuss writing techniques or whatever crosses your mind ...

I got another robo DM from a different account.

I wonder what's in it for them. I think that in the past similar ploys have been used to plant advertising.

I felt like I was missing out, since I haven’t gotten any of those bot DMs you were talking about, but no more!

I just had some clearly bot account say hello and ask how was my day. It was quite alright, thank you very much, and I wish you a prompt meeting with the moderators :)

So...I'm currently writing Chapter 7 of book 2. Book one was 38 chapters long... and I came to a point where I needed to have a character mention/introduce another character. And all of a sudden i realized a horrible thing..... somehow, in ALL of those chapters....I never gave that character a last name. A main character.... no last name... I gave a one-night-stand guy who only existed in the story for a few paragraphs a last name....but somehow... one of my main characters never got one.....

I couldn't believe it. Now, admittedly, she is not THE main character...but she is A main character. (or at least, she was in book 1)

Now, I have to go back into book 1, and find appropriate places to edit a last name into it. *shakes my head*....What have I done....

Just introduce the last name now. If it didn't feel necessary in book 1, you might not have needed it there. Just leave be and introduce it in book 2. You can even have a character make a comment that they never knew her last name if you want to.
