Those operating system license codes are probably issued by the hardware reseller.Microsoft?
Grr!
I have just bought a new PC with Win 10. It has a Microsoft product code, part under scratch-off panel. My wife and I have spent a quarter of an hour, with bright kitchen lights, our reading glasses, a magnifying glass, and a torch to try to decipher the code.
Even now we are not sure we have it correctly. It is too small and indistinct. .
Years ago, I bought a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet from Best Buy. It came with Windows 10, which I assumed was loaded and licensed by Microsoft. But two years later when the computer crashed and I had to reload the OS, I needed the license key (which I failed to keep from the box.). The Microsoft support person said I would need to call Best Buy for a replacement key, because they had their own bulk key licensing agreement to issue it.
Microsoft seems to sell hardware and software separately, even though they make both. It's a business arrangement thing.
