Try to remember you're not responsible for their feelings or actions. I know you probably feel like you should "fix" something. That's what we do; we're hardwired that way. You don't have to do this. Hugs, hon!

I took a Finnish woman spending a year in the U.S. up Nort Minnesota with me and it was probably one of the highlights of her trip.

There is a lot of Norwegian up there and a fair share of Finn mixed in to everyday speak. After months she had never heard anything approaching Finnish from an American and all of a sudden she was picking up snippets here and there from people (especially names) who can’t speak it but use pieces of it in the Nortland.

My Norwegian grandma was born on the kitchen table in what is now a ghost town in Alaska, right about 9 months and 1 day after great-grandma arrived in Alaska.

This is true. There are Finnish words in normal speech as well as Swedish here. Also Native American and German. Minnesota is a strange place, sone say we are a province of Canada. When I first came here you could use Canadian coins if you didn’t have American coins even though they were 75% less.
