Drug seizures are up at the border, but you're not going to stop the drug problem at the border. If it gets to costly to smuggle the drugs in, the cartels will set up labs to make the drugs in the US.

No the way to stop the drug problem is to get rid of the demand. That is how. It's not a huge secret. But, and here is the rub, to get rid of the demand will require money, billions of dollars more directed at the problem, not the enforcement, and those enforcement dollars need to keep being spent as well.

Also, it might ( I say might since it is hard to quantify a hypothetical) not happen in a short period of time, it might take decades. Are you going to agree to tax increases to pay for that? Are any other of your brethren going to agree to multi-billion dollar investments in social systems to clear up the drug abusers?

Record seizures at points of entry does not minimize what’s being smuggled across our borders. It indicates there’s so much of it that cartels can deal with the loss at checkpoints. We don’t know what we don’t know. What we do know is the numbers of overdoses are going up and the targets are getting younger.
