Texas Roll Call v9!

I just don't understand how that river got its name :p
I hope you are yours are unaffected, Mr. T!

As for myself, eating a Bill Miller salad with BBQ chicken and a sweet tea  watching a pack of grackles hunt. Oh yeah, home! :D

I'm not in Texas, or the USA but I wondered what the living is like in your part of the world, in particular Mansfield and the surrounding area.
I like a beer, and want to put some roots down where there winters are short and not to cold. land is not expensive so I could raise some hens, pigs maybe even a couple of head beef cattle. fruit trees (apples for cider of the alcoholic variety) space for an adult play room.

what advice would you give a brit thinking of moving that way?

The countryside around the DFW area is beautiful!

You are really spoiled for choice here in all those categories. If I were putting my roots down here for the first time I would opt for somewhere about an hour or two from the coast. Close enough to pop down there and far enough so that hurricanes lose most of their punch before they get to you. Go far south enough that you miss Tornado Alley, too. I had to look up Mansfield, I'm not familiar with that area. I think you are still in tornado territory there.

Dallas is great, but too far from the coast in my opinion. Our coast is great, one of the few states left where you can drive a vehicle and make fires on the beach. And camp. Great fun, and possible even in the off months. It depends on what you want. If you want something really cheap you can find that in remote areas quite easily. If you want to be on the outskirts, San Antonio is pretty good, and probably cheaper than Dallas/Fort Worth. The culture in Austin is great and super kink friendly, but again it's more expensive. One more note, it can get pretty darn cold in Dallas. Also, I believe snow and ice is not unusual there (please chime in, those from the area?) But further south (as in Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and below) snow is quite unusual.

The great thing about Texas is that it's a pretty straight shot to get from one place to another, so if you have an area you want to frequent you can find something in a different area to live, but still visit pretty easily. As long as you're not talking something like El Paso to Beaumont..

Do you have any other particulars you are looking for?

Your lunch is making me hungry!

It is Grackle season. They are everywhere! Watch where you park.

Might I toss in another suggestion here? The area east of Austin and west of Houston has beautiful green rolling hills that remind me a little of parts of England. Brenham is a decent sized town with plenty of open spaces around and great little towns around it. It's more expensive than some parts of the state, but not as bad as others. Austin, Houston, and San Antonio are within a couple of hours, it's far enough from the coast to get away from the horrendous humidity and hurricanes, it's south of the worst tornado territory, and the bluebonnets in the spring are amazing. The settlers in the area were largely Czech and the local beers are great.

Dang, I think I just talked myself into moving!
