Julia walked cauciously into the clearing. Looking in all directions, least she be caught in a trap but it appeared no one was here. She relaxed a bit and walk further into the clearing. About 100 ft away, there was another body of water. She walked over to it and crouched again looking around. She cupped her hand and drank from it when suddenly she heard a growl from behind her. She stood and turned and saw a dog snarling at her. Could he be rabid she wonder. Damn, if she had not lost her pistol to that man. One shot would tell if the animal was rabid or just protecting his territory. She stepped back into the water and the animal snarled at her. She moved deeper into the water. The animal moved forward but did not attack. She kept moving backward until the water covered all but her neck and head. She watched the dog watching her and wondered who own it and when he or she would appear to claim him. So now she was trapped and Julia did not like it much. She swam to the right and the dog moved in that direction as he did when she went left. She looked behind her to see how far she would have to swim and knew it was too far. She was not a good swimmer. So she and the dog were at a stale mate. Neither would give an inch.
