That is so cool! And I do need it, my son said just a few days ago that he wants to self publish. So far there are two projects of my own that might fit.

I don't know if I'm going to use either of those sites to publish, mostly, I am excited about not having to lug around a stack of printer paper for a 300-600 page book when trying to edit or have people read and edit it for me.

Your son wants to publish as well? What's he writing?

When I was editing for Simon and Schuster, it was with two huge stacks of paper, compared one to the other. I haven't done that in a while. I think I prefer the informality of not having to do that.

I've only had a beta reader/editor on one of my projects here, and although that was really helpful and fun, I have that sort of protective instinct of a work in progress, like a painter that covers up their ongoing work. Exposing it to criticism until I'm done with it doesn't suit me, then after I'm done I'm done. I also leave my mistakes, and there are a lot here. It's good to go back and see the evolution of the way I write. I make a good beta reader myself, but other than that one time, I haven't asked. Probably what puts me securely in amateur status, not wanting the professional opinion of someone like me.

My son is working on quite a few stories. One he's been working on for years, it's a fantasy story of a boy who is on Earth who has strong personalities that become different people. Anger, ignorance, depression, happiness...etc. It's written in his first person, as him, with me as his mom and Ulaven as his dad and his sister as his sister, but we're aliens with morphing superpowers.

It helped him model personality behavior quite a bit, with a lot of insight, for a kid with autism. My favorite is his classification of "Ignorance" who is a personality that knows all the facts, but has no wisdom to use them. Then there's "Nothing" who feels no way one way or the other about whether or not he'd die, but he gives everything to protect the group.

I asked for the power to heal, and he gave it to me. But if I'm stressed out in battle and someone makes me very angry, I turn into a Medusa type vengeance creature, and only Ulaven's character can calm me down.

Really? Maybe it's the artist in me that feels the need for validation, for someone to look at it and say something about it. Then again, it is 1,131 pages(I need to recount but that's about where it is) and I'm feeling worn down by the immensity of the project. I want to not only hold a copy, imitating the look and feel of a real book, to boost me back onto the path, but also to make it easier for someone else to handle. I'm not letting anyone except people I personally know in the real world touch it yet, so, there's the paranoia. Just a bit. But because it's so big, I'd like someone else to look it over and tell me where weak spots and mistakes are. ...but mostly I just want to hold it. Like, literally an ache inside of parental yearning here. I want to touch it.

That sounds genuinely interesting. Really cool concept and I like that bit about you and Ulaven's characters. Def encourage the self-publishing because that's really cool and sounds like something people would be interested in reading.

Yeah, it's weird. Really. I feel validation when I get reviews. Self encapsulated, not sure if that's good or bad. If I were doing it for money, definitely, but it's probably why I'm not doing it for money. My precious, precious word babies.

He's been at this story for years and years, and it's a great conversation for us to discuss. He's come so far from a little kid vowing that he'll never read.

This is awesome. Daniel Radcliffe doing "commentary" for a Harry Potter scene.

I love that man.

On that note, go see "Horns"

http://ihdwallpapers.com/download/daniel_radcliffe_horns_movie-1024x768.jpg

ha, hatman

horns - seen it. interesting film, gotta be low budget and very quirky/dark. i like how daniel's moving his acting career on and not allowing the iconic potter to block progress. not seen him in equus yet, just the earlier version of that film.

It's hilarious. Just the deadpan total disregard for fans looking for input, while still making fans so very happy.

I really liked "Horns" a lot. Expected nothing, got a lot more.

I have read Equus, but never saw a production of it.

Hah! I'm crying because my son narrated it.

"EVERY EPISODE OF SUPERNATURAL"

random person: *dies*

cut to Sam and Dean eating on the impala outside a food truck

Sam: so get this a random person across the country died

Dean: ok but it’s probably not our thing

*it is their thing*

Scene change: Dean and Sam walking outside

Dean or Sam: hey do you really think we should be taking this case, considering the season’s overarching plot line?

Dean or Sam: we’ve got no leads so I’ve got to work or I’ll go crazy

Dean: hello sheriff pay no attention to the fact we look like supermodels, have ridiculous names on these clearly fake FBI badges and my brother has the same hair style as Jackie Kennedy and give us all the info on this case

random sheriff: this case? Why you FBI boys are wasting your time. There isn’t a case here.

Visibly shaken white woman holding baby: this isn’t like (random person) I just can’t believe it

Dean: did you hear or smell anything weird? Sulfur? Cold spots? These are very official FBI questions.

Visibly shaken white woman holding baby: Of course, agents. Look I’ve told you everything I know, except for this mysterious hint.

*Sam swallows and looks at Dean*

*Scene change*

*Impala pulls into motel*

*research*

Sam: I think it’s this thing

*it’s not that thing*

Sam: get this, I think we’re dealing with this thing.

Dean: That’s great Sammy but I think I know where the thing is going to be

Monster: attacks visibly shaken white woman holding baby

*Sam and Dean arrive just before visibly shaken white woman holding baby passes out

Monster: *chokes Sam*

*Camera shot of Sam’s face as he is being chocked*

If only Sam could reach the phone/ knife/ gun!!!!

Sam: *eyes roll back into head*

Dean: arrives in the nick of time and kills monster

Visibly shaken white woman hugs baby, she is teary-eyed: “so you’re telling me monsters are real??? Thank you for saving us!!! If only you could have saved that random person. I guess I’ll have to move on now.”

*scene change, Sam and Dean in Impala*

Dean or Sam: that was the right thing to do

Dean or Sam: but was it

Dean or Sam: sometimes you can’t save everyone.

*implication that story of random person is the same as Sam/ Dean’s season plot line issue

Dean and Sam look at each other

Sam is clearly nervous

Dean is stoic

Impala drives into rain

Fade to black

what made that even better (weirder?) was i got halfway through before i realised there wasn't an antelope being gnawed on in the opening scene....
(head was still thinking werewolves and vampires)

Which opening scene?

Equus? Horns? Harry Potter? (not likely..)

it was a pretty impala, with a slightly sad look in its eye that somehow managed to simultaneously convey both a lack of reproach and a certain ennui with life....

Her name is Baby.

And nobody puts her in a corner.

I saw a preview for this movie and thought YES! I must see this! And then I realized I have had had this book on my GoodReads "to-read" list for over a year now. So now I'm conflicted...do I read the book, knowing I'll pick the movie apart because rarely compare or do I go ahead and see the movie and then know I'll read the book with those characters in my mind the entire time (even if the book describes them differently)?

Oh, yeah. That's rough. I'd suggest the movie first.

Beautiful Creatures worked out that way for me too. See the movie, read the book.

That way they get better.

Only time that went really sideways was seeing Asylum and then reading Asylum (Marton Czokas, Ian McKellan)

I liked the book Beautiful Creatures, the movie not so much. And it was because the characters did not gel - I hate when that happens!

And are you talking about the book Asylum written by Madeleine Roux?

I liked the movie, but the book was better. Didn't like the series though, it sort of petered out on romance and got into angst.

Patrick McGrath wrote this Asylum, a psychological analysis of a narcissistic artist that fell in love with a woman with borderline personality. Lots of abuse and clinical explanations.

The movie was...a really fucking weird romance, so...yeah.

Yeah, the series did kind of fizz out - I don't think I even bothered reading the last book.

Okay, I read a different Asylum book. I think I either got it free through GoodReads or NetGalley. I'll have to check out the Asylum you're talking about.

And now I  you even more that I know you're a fellow book nerd!

Yeah, it's a trip. Clinical book, movie made into a weird ass romance. Great performances though, worth it just to see Marton Czokas kiss.

Of course I am a book nerd! First nerdom I committed my life to.

I think it's my favorite nerdom. So much so I tattooed it on my body.

Yeah? Do you have a picture?

My mom said the biggest tears she'd ever seen on anybody ever was when I said my brothers and sisters (7-10 years older than me) all had copies of the Lord of the Rings but I didn't.
