Story Research: What would your remote do?

Rubyfruit's accident with her TIVO remote and the washing machine has festered and turned into a possible story idea:

"What would happen if a Remote Control was altered by washing it so it controlled people instead of a TV/VCR/Stereo/whatever?"

The attached picture is of two of my remote controls.

The research questions:

Which Remote would you wish would work an people? The one on the right has a "mute" button, the one on the Left has a "prog(ram)" button.

What effect would each button have on the subject?

Things like "mute," "pause," and "sleep" are pretty easy, but what effect would the "OFF" button have? How about "Rewind" or "Fast Forward?"

Does the "TV" mode button make the subject want to wear women's clothing or vice versa?

So many buttons with possible effects to discover by trial and error. <sigh> It's just too much for one author's imagination. ;)

Definitely the one on the left.

program - very handy!
repeat - I can see that coming in handy for a man who misses EVERYTHING a woman says or for a woman when the guy FINALLY hits the um..ya know, right spot. *blush*
speedx2 - oh yeah. the possibilities are endless!
slow - see above
display - well, that one displays the channel info, time, etc. so you could use it to display mood or current thought in a story. That would be COOL!
memory - to program things you don't want it to forget? My birthday, anniversary, favorite sexual games, etc. VERY COOL OPTION!
seek - cycle through the sexual reperatoire? Kickass!
off - turns 'em off. puts them to sleep or just sends them away
ff - gets them through whatever they're babbling about faster
rewind - hrmm....to go back to redo an event, perhaps?

lmao @ TV mode!

"Which Remote would you wish would work an people? The one on the right has a "mute" button, the one on the Left has a "prog(ram)" button."

Tough one. There are a few people I'd love to mute... *lol* But PROG is so tempting. Is the prog unlimited? Because if it is I could program them to shut up and dance.

"What effect would each button have on the subject?"

Hmmm - the # buttons could be used for showing various body parts - #1, #2, #3...

Rewind is good. If they say or do something I don't like I could rewind it them and give them another chance to get it right.

Fast foward... well, we could just skip right past the small talk...

How about the "next" button on CDs and DVD remotes? Perhaps that could be used to get them to change hair styles and outfits?

"Does the "TV" mode button make the subject want to wear women's clothing or vice versa?"

Yes... and to sing David Bowie songs.

Here's food for thought: I have a remote with a 3x5 LCD screen and a cursor thingy that controls the action. It controls everything: TV, Receiver, CD Changer, DVD, through many, many "screens" on it's display.

I have a "programable universal remote" too, but the button on it are too generic or unlabeled (it has a card to label how you've programmed them.)

I decided not to use that one as my model, because it doesn't have any buttons labeled for specific purposes. The story concept needs the button labels to give a clue to what they're going to do after it's transformed.

One additional question: What button would you WISH a "people remote" had?

I like the one on the right...it's much more curvy and feminine...

Play...would cause me to frolic as if I didn't have a care in the world

1, 2 3....etc would create multiple sexual positions

hrmmmm....

"change" would be useful and you could almost make it fit. For changing those things about your lover you wish you could change but know you can't.

I'd be hesitant to use the remote at all. I sort of like my friends the way they are. But that's thinking too seriously about something meant to be taken lightly.

I have to disagree with those of you who said left.

The one on the right has a button that says "move" that is far more attractive than any buttons on the left.

Also, it has arrows for that very command.

If I wish it had another button, I would wish it would have a "translator" button.

For those times when messages are far too cryptic.

I hate wasting time getting to the meaning of something that is essentially not worth the time or effort.

I think you've missed my point. There are NO BUTTONS... It's got a little computer screen on it. Make up any buttons you want.

Yuck, that's even worse for the story's purposes. :p I need the button labels to translate TV/VCR functions to "People" functions.

The one on the left has a "skip/Frame advance" button with symbol similar to the "next" button on a CD player

i agree with nora but i would add instant replay

That's what the "repeat" button on the left remote does -- IRL it rewinds to an index point and returns to Play mode.

The one on the right has a "Help" button -- that might work as a "translator" function -- maybe?

Anyone else got any suggestions?

What about a "stop doing that immediately" button? Maybe combined with the mute button.

I love the mute button.

I love the mute button.

Wouldn't that be the "pause" button?

the remote on the right has a 'swap' button.. swap for different partners... a tall, dark, mysterious partner.. for a blond, muscular, playful partner. Or from man, to woman.. the potential is endless!

:D

I thought it said "swat". :D

I could deal with "swat" instead of "swap" -- one push for each stroke delivered to a sweet behind. Now, does it cause one subject to swat another, or make a subject feel a phantom swat?

(Can mindless serendipity read and assign functions based on worn labels?)
