How do you decide which genre to list a story under when it fits at least partially into more than one catagory?

Some people like to scatter their stories - presents a diverse and varied image. This means a wider readership.

Some prefer to keep to one category and make a name for themselves in that one category. This means a large fan base for categorical readers.

Depending on which you are, you can do either. But I would recommend that you look at the theme which appears most in your story - the one that stands out and strikes you, as well as the category that you think the story would appeal to readers the most in.

Good luck!

You know, I was asking myself that very same question just the other day.. I answered myself, how rude eh? heh heh..

If I figure out a good method, I'll let ya know, hope more of the pros answer, its always interesting hearing different varied viewpoints on a subject so you can formulate your own answer to your question from all the answers :)

Go with your gut instinct on which is your overall theme.

But there are some things you shouldn't probably do, eg at the top of my head:

A bunch of people having sex in the first time category
A non-consenting cousin in the incest category
Vampires in the romance category

But there are always exceptions of course!

Or eg if it is a mixture of romance and sci-fi, you would have to weigh it up, because romance has probably more readers, but too indepth tech stuff about dozens of other worlds may be offputting to them.

Unless you want to give more details, we probably can't help as much as we could. (hint hint :D )

Welcome!

So many to choose from

I have so many stories written to choose from.
Unfortunately most have been typed out on an electric typewriter, so until I get my (*&%^^*%^ OCR program up and running, I have to retypw them all out by hand, and I be a lazy beast at the moment. However I promise to have submitted at least one story by Saturday AM.
Quick question... If a man has sex with a sister in law, is it truly incest?
And thanks to all who have answered my post. The information and advice is extremely helpful!

I think one has to read ones stories with an objective eye and ask oneself, in which genre will this story be most well received? Simply because a story has certain element which might fit the criteria of a particular genre, doesn't mean that it wouldn't do better in another. Of course, if ones principles dictate that a story should be placed in a certain category--e.g., you write a story featuring an interracial paring, but feel strongly that it should be placed in the erotic couplings category--then let the cards fall where they may.

Silly question seasparks, is a sister in law still family after a divorce? Sex is only incest when you are related to them by birth

Pick out the intention when you first started. Sometimes the title and often the short blurb (description) will give the category. Just pick the most apt.

But it doesn't really matter because Lauren (whose site it is, with Manu) will change the category if they feel it really doesn't fit.

The incest thing. You can argue all day about this. It seems a large percentage of incest writers are actually a bit put off about incest and won't actually write about blood relatives, so they just have father/mothers-in-law, step siblings etc.

You'll probably find some readers in the incest category (the most read) will damn you for calling that incest. But readers of Romance will be really miffed if it's submitted there, you pervert.

Welcome to the zoo.

Just like how you categorise electronic dance music.

A mix of trance and hardcore? Trancecore!

Got a mix of hiphop and trance? Booty Trance or ghetto trance!

Got a mix of Acid Techno and Breakbeats? Acid Breaks!

Most stories could fit in multiple categories. Very few stories are strictly one category efforts. Some of my stories have mild to moderate bdsm undertones. Yet I only have one in that category. All of mine could fit in lesbian sex, but really, if one character is an elf it seems Sci-fi/fantasy is a better fit to the theme.

Use your common sense, if the characters are related, whether M/M, F/F, F/F/M, or M/M/F/F the best fit is probably incest. If the main character is tied to a vaulting horse & whipped with a cat o nine, it's probably BDSM.

If you are in a real bind, remove the story, examine the erotic sequences and see if you can determine what drives them the most.

If you are still unsure, flip a coin, submit to that category and put a note in the comments field asking Laurel to see if she thinks it fits better in the one that lost.

... Vampires in the romance category ...
Hve you thought of putting this in the Story Ideas forum?

Or you could really push the vote out with

Sibling Vampires in Love

or

The Vampire, his Sister, her Girlfriend and the Alien

(Please note these titles are copyrighted) :D

Seasparks,

Killer Muffin (the much missed) once said her theory on picking categories was to go with the one that would piss off the fewest readers. For instance: if the story is about two sisters falling in love (incest, romance, lesbian) you'd probably want to go with incest since those readers are less likely to object to elements of the other two categories.

Colly's suggestion about asking Laurel is also a good one I've followed on a couple of my own stories.

Welcome on board and let us know when your story is posted.
