the fight never ends ...

This board has a Stories section with loads of lit stuff, including some of mine:

You might want to check for your goods also.

Bastards.

But how on earth can you search that mess of a site?

It's a maze of jumbled posts and disjoint threads.

Not only are they thieves, they are stupid and disorganized thieves.

I think the site is almost the same software as the forums here, I used the "Search" function.

Every time I enter the anti-spam letters it kicks it back out.

I do not wish to join that dumb ol' site to look for stories.

I'll try again.

No wonder I can't figure out what the computer support guys are talking about. That site made my head hurt. I checked the first 20 pages or so for "possibles".
The search function wouldn't work.

The site owner does have some rules. Here are two from the sticky at the top of the story area:

• Do not add links to other story sites. While we do understand that you might have copied the stories from some other site, you can give credit to the original author rather than advertising the site.

• Do not post copyrighted stories. If any story is found to be copyrighted, it will be deleted without delay, and may result in banning of the poster.

A complaint that your story has been posted might be all that is required. A site owner can't know about everything that the members might post.

Um... is there such a thing as non-copyrighted stories? (except really old ones)

Rat Bastards! So sorry they did this sweets....

Hopefully Og's right and a simple notification to the site administrator will take care of it.

Google :)

Just choose search terms like character/place names, titles, whatever. Once you've put those in the search box, restrict it to the site in question, like this:

Code:
montana summer site:www.xboard.us

Using Montana Summer as an example.

PLEASE STEAL FROM ME!

My ego really needs the lift :(

You know...I've wondered about this as well. I doubt there is much anyone can do to prevent this without ensuing a hefty cost for themselves on this level. But is there a way to make the "advertising" WORK in your favor, authors? I mean...if they tried to sell or make some real money off your writings, it seems you are safe enough with the publication dates documented here....

But how can you USE rip-off places in your favor? If the site is a MESS...well, chances are there's not much use for it anyway as people get REALLY annoyed having to work too hard for entertainment.

That's why I like Lit so much...it is VERY user friendly here and mostly pretty easy to understand and access stuff. And although there are ASSHOLES that treat newbies bad...there are also MANY MANY who are willing to help new folks along if they are at all persistent.

Lit IS very good...USE these sites that rip you off...USE THEM better than they are trying to use YOU.

In the past there have been websites that scanned stories from Lit and posted them without giving credit or even asking. My horror would be to have some slimeball, wannabe writer to steal a story, change the name and post it as his/her own on some other site. That would be very hard to find.

Thanks, love.

Yes, I've done that before, too. I've googled story titles and specific sentences for some time. (They're still saved in my toolbar, as a matter of fact.) But I haven't caught anything lately.

But I was attempting to actually search on the silly site itself.

And THAT is damn near impossible.

So did I *laugh* That's why I went to Google. Message board search functions are all but worthless.

I just googled my user name 'rachlou' and it led me to a Yahoo 360 blog where some woman had cut and pasted one of my stories. She did acknowledge me as the author and gave her reason for posting it as, "It moved me to tears and I wanted you all to read it." Well great, but she could have said where she found it and maybe asked me first!!

Actually, this one I know! When they say that they are meaning stories that are posted on sites with no author credit or as anonymous. Because there is no known author and no one claims credit for them they are considered fair usage and anyone can post them. The same thing applies to a lot of the artwork and graphics floating around the web. No one knows the artist of them or who originally made the graphic so they are considered free-usage. The old, defunct site White Shadows had a HUGE collection of stuff that was posted without an authors name to it and since it went down the stories from there have spread out far and wide on the net making it almost impossible to track down the author of them.

While they are saying that it's OK to post that stuff because there is no copyright to them the realism is there probably is. At some time in the past someone lifted it from a site and stripped all copyright info on it and posted it without give credit. The mentality of this is that if there is no copyright info or authors name on it then they can post it without permission. That isn't the case as we all know-even without that information it is still protected by copyright law. Webmaster and moderators of sites, such as the board that was posted in this thread, can easily put a stop to the piracy of stories by looking up the title or a couple story lines but they chose not to, letting it continue on and only doing something about it when the author of the works complains. By merely asking to submit proof of where the story came from (the URL, site name, things like that) a lot of it could be stopped because someones not going to submit something if they know that the people that run the site are going to check where it came from.

Right now there isn't a lot sites can do to stop pilfering. They can do things like disable right click, put an overlay over the page so it can't be copied, get rid of the ability to download the text in file form but realistically there are very simple ways around those things, ones that even someone who isn't all that tech savvy can figure out and do. There are also programs out there that can download the whole page so you can go in and take what you want from it. There are plug-ins out there for browsers such as Firefox that can be configured to grab everything from text to picture. Chances are that even if someone does come up with a good form of protection against pilfering it's going to be only a matter of time before someones going to find a way around it.

I search my own name (and variations of it) for the hell of it sometimes.

I'll be running all the virus scan stuff and spraying things down with lysol when I leave for the evening.

Anyone read Italian? (Well it looks like Italian to me)

Unless I'm misstaken, Da Helen con amore is my little baby "From Helen With Love".
At least they've left it as copyright to me.
