those are really nice!

I'm tinkering with making a silver collar with silver fingerprint adornments. Whilst steel is nice, I want something more luxe and bespoke.

the best, if you are looking for steel and other metals.

I covet one of their titanium collars (the Talena) because I'm allergic to nickel and can't bear stainless against my skin for more than an hour or so. However, the thing is stupid expensive, and since I wasn't even able to talk Mistress into a $6.50 fabric collar the other day, I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming. :(

Ohhhh nice! but hell yeah... really pricey. I've seen silver ones for about the same. I'd have reservations about the permanent locking one as well. could be really dangerous if you were in an accident.

So metal collars, sure they are sturdy and have that vibe going for them, but are they practical?

What can you do with a metal collar that you can't do better with leather?

That's a serious question.

Some people (me) don't react so well to leather. The dyes used to color it irritate my skin after awhile. Also, you have to condition leather semi-regularly to keep it in decent shape, which isn't a problem for me, but some people may not like to do it. Plus, leather really doesn't need to get wet (at least not often). It also stretches and can eventually break.

The downside that I've heard about stainless steel collars is that they are HEAVY. Titanium, being one of the lightest metals, wouldn't have that issue, I wouldn't think.

While I LOVE the feel of leather against my skin, for a truly long term, long lasting collar it can be an impractical material. Like Bunny said, it stretches, which can initially be good to get that perfect, made for you fit. But after that, it can continue to stretch out so it doesn't fit quite right anymore. It can lose its texture as it ages, especially with constant wear. The acids your body naturally produces aren't the best for it to keep looking its best, and some people really do have issues with sensitivities to either the leather itself or the chemicals used to create the leather.

There are so many different types of metal out there that it allows for a huge degree of personalization and almost anyone can find some metal they can stand having against their skin forever. With me, unless it's a pure metal, my skin will work its magic quickly and discolor it (and make it leave nasty green spots). For the long term, something made of a good, high quality metal would work best. I could get it wet and not worry about ruining it, and also avoid the worry of it irritating my skin.

I'm still all for leather play collars and cuffs and the like, but definitely for the every day, long term, metal is the way to go.

Ah see I wasn’t thinking all day or aesthetics collars, just pure function.

So I think leather is better in that respect because it contours more to the neck, yet you can still reach in there and grab hold of it to maneuver the victim. It just has a more tailored feel, with a solid collar you have to leave it kind of loose or put it low on the neck so it can slide up and create some space.

Hmm, I suppose if you used it differently.

A solid collar would be better for immobilizing I think. Mount it somewhere, put her in it, it won’t give like leather and leave her unable to even squirm… I think.

It just depends on what your intended function of the collar will be. Do you want something to be worn all the time? Do you want something that both of you can play with? Do you want something with a good amount of weight as a reminder? Do you want something that can blend in like normal jewelry? Do you want something that sticks out?

And then you get into the sizing.... I could be mistaken, but the impression I get from your posts, YC, is that you prefer the taller, almost full-neck styles of collars. In that case, yes, leather could be easier to play in because it's more flexible. It really is just a matter of personal preferences.

Keep in mind that many women wear solid necklaces already. They're not necessarily ALWAYS used for immobilization.

Naw, I'm not into posture collars. I don't think, never actually used one.

I just think collar, when I hear collar, same thing and function as you would use on an animal. (Which reminds me I've been wanting to use one of those pinch collars. :D)

Token of affection collars, I understand, they are nice, but its not what my mind goes too, and so metal collars are a bit odd in that respect.

Hmm, how about a combination. Tight metal collar with a leather outer ring for handling ease.

ive never worn steel collar, surely it must be uncomfortable to wear but i surpose thats the whole point

I suppose it depends on the design. the more ornamental ones are like jewellery. i used to have a silver choker in a band design that was very comfortable to wear, even quite tightly.

the really heavy industrial looking collars are probably uncomfortable though.

well I no longer have one and have never actually been 'collared'. not quite ready for that yet.

I have worn a bead choker collar for play, but not for any ownership significance. I find myself coveting them though and I know that if I can get over my tech problems I'll have an enviable one of my own making, but it's not quite the same, is it?

I'm like a confirmed spinster hungry for an engagement ring.
