Actually, it was a Sidewinder, so you were right. That particular model The AIM 9X can be targeted by the pilot's helmet cueing system which allows the pilot to simply look at the spot he wants the missile to hit. This may be why it contacted the balloon at precisely the spot where the payload connected to balloon. However, this did allow the package to hit the water at a much higher rate of speed which might have completely destroyed the platform making it much harder to assess its intelligence-gathering capabilities.

That claim has been refuted by the previous DNI and by the former DefSec yesterday. This is the media trying to protect the Biden administration by claiming "Trump did it too."

The President knew about this long before Wednesday. We have been tracking this balloon for weeks. Joe wanted to keep it secret because he didn't want anything to interrupt Blinken's trip to China. It was only when civilians in Billings Montana saw the balloon and reported it to police that the press found out about it forcing Joe & Co to start lying about it.

I guess the DoD and pentagon got it wrong, then. On the other hand, Esper did not claim there were no Chinese balloons on trumps watch, just that he wasn’t aware and didn’t recall any during his 16 months on the job.
