One believes that a thread dedicated to the discussion of sports may be beneficial.

All sports are covered here, however, please refer to the beautiful game of Football, as football, and not soccer! thank you.

Ladies and Gentleman are welcome here. Find yourself a seat in front of the huge bank of monitors, place your order for food, beer and snacks.

Let the games begin.

Obviously this weekend is dominated by coverage of the Ryder Cup, can Europe once again beat off the American challenge and retain the cup?

But there is also a full programme of football in the UK, including the Mighty Chelsea taking on Tottenham. both sides undefeated.

Also this weekend we have the start of the paralympics in Athens.

Actually the most important game of football will be between Sheffield Wednesday and Bournemouth (come on you Owls).

I shall be glued to the Ryder Cup but will no doubt be peeking at the Paralympics as well

The Owls, but sir, do they not play in the Third Division? ;)

I'd be content to use "football" to refer to that no-hands game you like so much on your side of the pond but there is no suitable alternative to using the same word for the American game. Fortunately, I watch American football about as often as Colin Montgomerie ignores a catcall so perhaps it won't be much of an issue (at least for me). ;)

Well actually Admiral they play in Division one, as it is now called.

Ah, but one believes that is still the third divison in our fair land.

Well Kissophile, you must watch an awful lot of gridiron then, one believes Monty can never ignore a catcall! :D

Good Morning sports fans.

The European team got off to a flier in day one of the ryder cup. They lead the americans 6 1/2 to 1 1/2. Todays fourballs and foursomes should be interesting. Phil Mickleson dropped this morning, and Monty and Harrington team up again. The European side give first outings to Paul Casey, David Howell and Ian Poulter. Still a lot of golf to be played.

Man Utd 2 - 1 Liverpool

An excellent performance from man utd. Rio making his return after 12 months out.

Sadly for england, Stevie Gerrard looks like being out for two months with a broken metatarsal.

Good to see Rio making an excellent return, although I can't stand Man Utd England need him desperately - I am looking forward to seeing him and Ledley King play regularly together.

Its almost becoming fashionable to break your metatarsal isn't it!

Good day Wanderer, how are you this fine day?

I think its a new bone that they discovered, and it sounds good!

I Rio and Sol in the centre of Englands defence.....but we also have Terry and king, so plenty of talent to choose from.

Great result in the Ryder Cup, and it looks good for future European teams.

Hi Admiral.

I don't suppose you noticed that the Owls sacked their manager, Chris Turner after Staurday's diabolical loss.

Allegedly Sturrock (ex Southampton) could be taking over.

No wanderer, one didn't know that, but thanks for the information. I am not going to be able to sleep now, worrying about it! ;)

Brian Clough

Brian Clough who passed away yesterday was one of the greatest and most charismatic managers in English football history, and will be sadly missed.

Quick score report especially for wanderer.

Wigan Athletic 4-0 Sheffield United
Ellington 29, 35
Jason Roberts 33, 90

:D

He was also pretty good at boxing! Do you recall him hitting those fans that time they invaded the Notts Forest pitch.

Thanks for that Admiral, I enjoy seeing those in red and white stripes (can't bear to mention their name) lose almost as much as seeing the Owls win!
