Once again another TV cartoon character is the target of yet another conservative Christain homophobic group.
James Dobson founder of Focus on the Family is alleging that SpongeBob SquarePants is part of some sinister pro-homosexual plot to manipulate and brainwash kids and the public to promote the acceptance of homosexuality.

All this comes from a music video promoting tolerance of others featuring SpongeBob SquarePants released by musician/composer Niles Rodgers. Rodgers who wrote the disco hit We Are Family helped create the video through the We Are Family Foundation he also founded after Sept. 11 to teach children about acceptance, diversity and mulitculturalism.

Further accusations from this Christian group allege that SpongeBob has drawn the attention of some gay men. Sponge sometimes holds hands with his buddy "Patrick" and both watch an "imaginary" TV show, "The Adventures Of Mermaid Man" and "Barnacle Boy."
All this harks back to similar accusations back in 1999 from Rev. Jerry Falwell (Foulwell) about the Teletubbies character Tinkey Winkey. Some conservative critics have even accused the MTV based animated character "Daria" as promoting lesbianism or bisexuality.

Rodgers stated that the accusations are based on a misunderstanding from critics confusing the video with an unrelated website that supports gay youth also called We Are Family. Hmmm?

Regardless, it sounds like the same ol'same 'ol from another conservative Christian group trying to do everything possible to thwart any message of tolerance, whether sexual, cultural, or social.

So, is SpongeBob SquarePants and his buddy Patrick the new "Ambiguously Gay Duo?"

If they are, at least they're promoting something positive.
James Dobson's group isn't...

Lordy, this is just ridiculous.

Once again, bigotry makes headlines, eh? Though, i have to admit *I* had questioned Spongebobs sexuality before i realized he had a crush on that squirrel girl! :grins:

Specially in that episode where Spongebob and Patrick addopt that little clam or whatever? And Spongebob is the mother and Patrick is the father and they live together and act like they're married? Yea... that deffinately had me questioning certain :coughs: things.

Well, that's the thing about bigotry. It always makes headlines and it ends up backfiring on the bigots!.

Now more people are probably going to tune to the show and buy the videos or DVD's. :)

I didn't catch the "little clam" episode, but I'll look out for it! :)

Obviously the clam is a metaphor for pussy, and as such that would mean it was a bi threesome, rather than a gay parents thing.

Hehe, i'm laughing so hard over this.

:snickers: It's just the most ridiculous thing!

Seriously though, SpongeBob isn't gay. You know how I know? No cartoon characters are gay. know why that is? Cartoon characters don't have sex! Well, maybe they do on Boobarella, I dunno.

Like muppets for instance. Bert and Ernie are not gay because (as the people who make Sesame Street keep saying) muppets have no sexuality whatsoever! They're characters for little kids!

With the election over, the Religious Right needed something new to keep peoples attention. And, this is perfect for the simple-minded bigots they cater to. Lord (pun sorta intended) knows they don't have an intelligent argument to present anyways.

Well, "Queer Duck" is a cartoon and he's definitely Gay.

As he says, "I'm Gay as a goose!"

yes, but is it a character for little kids?

I thought I had distinguished between cartoons in general and cartoons for young children. My mistake.

Take Japanese anime rape videos for instance. they're cartoons in that they're animated, but are they intended or appropriate for kids? I think not.

Oh, I see.

You're right.

Childrens' vs adulterated and Animé.

Yeah, I've seen some really violent Japanese adult animé. I wonder if there's any gay Japanese (or Asian) animé? I'm sure there is.

Yes, there is. Although Japan has some odd censorship rules, like they're not allowed to show the clitoris or the glans, so a lot of Japanese porn is kind of limited, especially the videos. I wouldn't mind so much except that wth the pictures, they quite often blur out or delete those parts.

Or Andy Sipowicz.

hes at least a mormon

That's exactly what I thought of. He has the entire Mormon look going on.

Are there Gay Mormons? I mean...I know there are folks who are Gay and probably grew up Mormon, but are there Mormon Churches that welcome and embrace Gay people?

SpongeBob isn't gay or straight, creator says

January 29 2005 at 03:39PM

SpongeBob SquarePants, the wacky cartoon character who sparked a gay alert warning by US Christian conservative groups, is neither gay nor straight, says his creator.

He is asexual.

Two Christian activist groups said the innocent and hugely popular SpongeBob and his best mate, Patrick Starfish, were being exploited to promote acceptance of homosexuality.

SpongeBob's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, 43, said the allegations were far-fetched and his agenda did not go beyond fun and entertainment.

"It doesn't have anything to do with what we're trying to do," Hillenburg said in an interview on Friday, two days before the Asian premiere of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in Singapore.

"We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We're just trying to be funny and this has got nothing to do with the show."

Naive SpongeBob, who lives in a pineapple under the Pacific Ocean, was "outed" by the US media in 2002 after reports that the Nickelodeon TV show and its merchandise were popular with gays.

Influential American radio evangelist James Dobson, whose top political issues include opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion rights, said last week that SpongeBob had been included in a "pro-homosexual video".

SpongeBob is one of the stars of a music video due to be sent to 61 000 US schools in March.

The makers - the non-profit We Are Family Foundation -say the video is designed to encourage tolerance and diversity.

"Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity' within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary, but crosses a moral line," said Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family.

Hillenburg, a marine science teacher turned animator, who lives in Hollywood and is married with a six-year-old son, says he thinks there are "more important issues to worry about".

"I really don't pay much attention to this."

Such allegations were common in the history of cartoon and children's entertainment, he said.

"Just think of Laurel and Hardy or Ernie and Bert," he said, referring to two popular American comic icons - the former from the 1930s and the latter from the children's TV series Sesame Street. - Reuters

I say we still claim SpongeBob as one of us. *nods*

Also, I say we start buying a lot of Jesus stuff, that'll really fuck up Dobson ...

Well, the Ernie and Bert bit won't work; the same people say that they're gay too, because two men must be in they are roommates and sleep in the same bed on a children's educational show. I can't believe I was so blind not to see.
