Once again another TV cartoon character is the target of yet another conservative Christain homophobic group.
James Dobson founder of Focus on the Family is alleging that SpongeBob SquarePants is part of some sinister pro-homosexual plot to manipulate and brainwash kids and the public to promote the acceptance of homosexuality.
All this comes from a music video promoting tolerance of others featuring SpongeBob SquarePants released by musician/composer Niles Rodgers. Rodgers who wrote the disco hit We Are Family helped create the video through the We Are Family Foundation he also founded after Sept. 11 to teach children about acceptance, diversity and mulitculturalism.
Further accusations from this Christian group allege that SpongeBob has drawn the attention of some gay men. Sponge sometimes holds hands with his buddy "Patrick" and both watch an "imaginary" TV show, "The Adventures Of Mermaid Man" and "Barnacle Boy."
All this harks back to similar accusations back in 1999 from Rev. Jerry Falwell (Foulwell) about the Teletubbies character Tinkey Winkey. Some conservative critics have even accused the MTV based animated character "Daria" as promoting lesbianism or bisexuality.
Rodgers stated that the accusations are based on a misunderstanding from critics confusing the video with an unrelated website that supports gay youth also called We Are Family. Hmmm?
Regardless, it sounds like the same ol'same 'ol from another conservative Christian group trying to do everything possible to thwart any message of tolerance, whether sexual, cultural, or social.
So, is SpongeBob SquarePants and his buddy Patrick the new "Ambiguously Gay Duo?"
If they are, at least they're promoting something positive.
James Dobson's group isn't...
