Ok so if I'm on the pill and we use condoms, is there any need for a spermicide? And as far as I know you can get lube and spermicide together or something. I definetly wanna get some lube, especially for my first time but don't know anything about spermicide really. Anyone with info?

There's always a risk of pregnancy if you're going to be having sexual intercourse. In theory, the more methods of protection you use, the more you reduce that risk. If you're not allergic to spermicide, it can't hurt to use it if you really want to be safer. I've used the spermicidal-lubricated condoms, but it turned out I'm mildly allergic to nonoxynol-9 (the active chemical in many, but not all, spermicides). I really had no interest in using a foam, so we just use the pill and condoms. Here's a pdf file with more info about spermicide: http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/spermicide.pdf

I do have a funny story about spermicide that a friend shared with me, though. She and her husband were using the foam type that comes in a can. One time when they were having sex, they managed to knock the can off their nightstand... and it exploded! Luckily nobody got hurt, but they had a hell of a time cleaning the stuff up from the walls, floors, furniture, etc. This is why I have no desire to use the foams. :p

Hmmm, only ever had that happen with a can of coke, lol.
Thanks, that article is pretty helpful. :)

That's pretty funny, but only because it didn't happen to me! :D

Lynxie has a really good point about allergies and irritation. Whenever we've used a n-9 lubed condom, I've ended up completely raw and swollen. Come to think of it, I got quite a few yeast infections back then too, though that could have been the pills I was on. This article explains why Planned Parenthood stopped distributing N-9 lubed condoms and that you should not use spermicide multiple times a day or for anal sex.

So, if you're thinking of trying it, I'd recommend doing so at a non-sexual time just in case you have a bad reaction...feeling like your tender bits have been set ablaze and desperately searching for a way, ANY way, to get the offending substance off/out of you kinda ruins the mood. :(

From the sounds of it, you're looking for a foolproof way for birth control. Is there such a thing beyond abstinence? Sure you can increase your odds but I've even known people who've had vasectomies become dads unexpectedly.

*shivers* pregnancy bad, yuck.

Right so, guess I'll try it out before hand.

Some condoms already have it.

No because some condoms come with it already on them, or you can choice one's without it. Up to you what you want.

spermicide - it burns!

If you decide to go with the spermicide and the condom (as well as the pill) I suppose it won't matter, but if your boyfriend doesn't use the condom and you use the spermicide as the second birth control method, you should warn him that it might burn when he pees afterward! Spermicides always have that effect on me anyway - quite a painful shock the first time it happened.

I personally wouldn't get the condums with the spermicide lube on them because it says on the box that you shouldnt use them more then once a day... no good if you wanna go all weekend long ;) I would recommend getting just lubed ones and a spermicide on the side. I've never used one... i was one of the silly ones that used withdrawl for a long time... we also used condums for a while and decided with just wasn't the right feeling, now i'm on the ring and it's the easiest thing in the world for me... my parents never found anything when i was living at home and i only have to remember it once every 4 weeks. I with you luck.
