Spenser's Bookstore

Great thread Spency - I tried to start a thread like this a while ago and it circled the drain for a bit before it disappeared. Hope you have better luck.

As for my favorite book ever - I have read and re-read and listened to the book on cassette about 3 times.....The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I wish someone would make a movie or mini-series out of it. Fantastic book - I wish I was half the writer Kingsolver is. (hmm if I were I wouldn't have ended that sentence with "is")

I just added that title to my booklist on booksfree.com. It sounds like something I might enjoy. That's another perk of a thread like this.....you are introduced to new books and authors. Thanks

I hope you like it and I'm gonna check out booksfree and see what I can get there. I used to work in a Library and would have access to all the new books before anyone else got their mitts on them. I loved that job.

If you decide to join let me refer you and reap the benefits.

I love libraries and I miss not living close to one. During the summers I'd check out two books and return them as soon as I read them.......sometimes in two days. It was the same with my son; we practically lived there.

What a fantastic idea for a thread... thank you.

I've already added several books to my list.

Well, just checked out the site and my husband will NEVER let me join - $$$. He says he makes the money and he will say how it is spent. He won't go for it either because he doesn't read and so doesn't encourage "that sort of wasteful hobby". I know, I know - I've been around and around it with him. He lets me go the library when I want so I guess I should be happy.

Looks like a good place to get books though - sorry I couldn't help you with the referral benefits. :(

That's not a problem. I understand how non-readers think about our hobby. I dealt with so many parents who would not give their child $1 to order a book, but would give them $5 for candy. When I taught the little ones it hurt to see them look longingly at the Scholastic Book Club orders knowing they couldn't buy anything. I'd always order several books with my personal money and use the bonus points to get more books and give them as rewards. I'm glad that I did because a lot of those kids turned out to be great adults!

Yes, unfortunately, he instilled his dislike for reading into his kids as well. When his youngest son lived with us I would try to encourage him to read and would tell him that he could read any of my books - he told me once "I learned all I need to learn in high school - I don't need to read any more." That broke my heart. Now that boy has 2 small ones he's not reading to either. I used to send the kids books for birthdays and Christmas but would have them returned. Sad - so very very sad.

I can remember Scholastic Reader in Grade School and how my mom would always buy me books - I still have those books and all my Golden Books from when I was a kid. Probably collector's items but I don't want to sell them - too many memories of special times on mommy's lap.

I just commented the other day that reading is a lost art - kids would rather sit in front of a TV now. :(

That was the one thing I wanted to do as a teacher...........instill in kids the joy of reading.

I come from a family of readers. I have 2 nieces and 2 nephews and they are avid readers, even my 10 year old nephew. I made him some bookmarks for valentine's day that he loves. I gave my son a gift card to a bookstore for Christmas and he went out the very next day and spent it. My older nephew appreciated the newspaper subscription he got.

I don't read suspense or thrillers. I read a lot of biographies/autobiographies, sci-fi, mystery and romance.

Well since you read mysteries, the suspense and thrillers kind of fit in that group. John Grisham, Steve Martini, and David Baldacci write what I court room dramas and suspense.

I have all in my collections and love their books.

Right now I am reading Stuart Woods Iron Orchid. I also like James Patterson, his Alex Cross series, Mary Higgins Clark, her daughter Carol Higgins Clark, John Grisham and Mary Jane Clark, just to name a few. Yes I have read all the Harry Potter books. I find most of my books at flea markets as well as our local Library sells older books very cheap paperbacks for 50 cents to $1.00 hardbacks for $2.00.

I like those writers as well. Thanks for popping in and saying hi. Please continue to come in and suggestion your next book...

Hey hon... thanks for dropping in and I am sorry your husband is so cheap.
Check to see if the library has a bus that comes out to your area. That would be better then going into town.

Hi Fire, thanks for popping in. That is what I hoped this thread would do and that it would give us a chance to talk about books that we have read or are reading.

Gee... maybe I need to start a book club like Oprah. LOL.... :D

Good Morning everyone. Coffee is avilable in the back, sit down and talk about the lastest book you are reading.

I am reading Virtical Run by Joseph R. Garber. This is one of those used library books I got. I tried to read it once, but got distracted and never finished it. So I am going back to it again. The rights to the book have been bought and they plan on making this into a movie. It is kind of like Die Hard, the first one, but different. This main character had fought years ago in Vietnam. Now he is a successful business man and he comes to work early before anyone else gets there and his boss comes in and tries to kill him. He is able to knock him out and when he leaves the office to get help, well the building is covered with people, hired professionals, to kill him. It is very well written and I think it will be a great movie.

So what are you reading?

Good morning Spenser ...

I'm not reading anything at the moment, since everything is still pretty much in boxes LOL

I just thought I would stop by and say hello

:rose:

Mmmmm that sounds like an erotic vampire book. OK question, what is it about vampires that women like. Is it the biting on the neck thing?

Yep that it is ...

I personally would have to say yes, its the biting of the neck and the control that is given.

But, I cant speak for all the ladies, its just a personal preference of mine.

It just seems that most women kind of get into vampires and the only thing I can figure it was, had to be the neck thing. And the submitting to the man.

I think deep down inside every woman has a wanton feeling of submitting to a man, some more than others.

The thought of being taken does have a certain ring to it. At least for me.

Spenser, maybe you should start a Spensers Confessional. :)

I am an avid reader myself. I am currently reading The Wreckers, a non-fiction account of shipwreckers, salvagers & "pirates" along the coast of Scotland. A very interesting read by Bella Bathurst

Mmmm maybe I need to get me a vampire outfit and have you come under my control! :)

That sound very interesting. I love to read historical books as well.
Thanks for dropping in and sharing.

About that confessional, there have been those that have joked that I got people to confess things to me that they normally would not tell anyone. Gee I wonder if it was my priest outfit and confessional box.
