I am a reader of books and I collect them as well. I have over 400 of them and most are 1st Editions and some are signed as well. I have noticed that some people have said something about reading and thought I would create a Bookstore kind of like the main ones you see where you can browse, read, drink coffee and have meetings and just talk about your favorite book or books.
As most of you know, my name comes from the books Spenser by Robert B. Parker. It did go to TV and even a few TV movies. Now Tom Selleck is doing TV Movies for another one of Parker's series of books on Chief of Police Jessy Stone.
Anyway I collect mostly mysteries and thrillers, court room dramas... pretty much who done it's.
So come in, browse around and let's talk about your favorite book or books that you are reading. Make suggestions and it doesn't have to be fiction, it can be anything. Just treat this tread like your favorite bookstore and hang out with other lovers of books. :)

What a wonderful thread. I recently donated a ton of books to our local book fair. I had too many that were collecting dust and thought that would be a good way to get them in the hands of people who wanted them and support a local charity at the same time.

That is Great DGO. Yea mine mostly are going to be like collectors stuff and things I will leave to my kids when I am gone. Some may end up with a lot of money. Some may not... who knows... but one thing is, they all love to read and have caught the bug from me. There are many that I get to check out writer and if I am not interested in collecting them I give them to them or friends. But the library is a great idea.

The book fair is an annual fund raiser for a charity. When I first started teaching, several friends and I went and bought workbooks and paperbacks to start room libraries. I think I must have spent $30 for a half-dozen boxes of books. Most of the books were only a nickel or a dime.

When I hurt my knee and couldn't walk the three blocks to the library, I found booksfree.com and have been with them ever since. Now that I've moved and don't live that close to a library, it's a godsend. I still buy books, but not many.

That is good to know hon. Thanks for sharing that. Where I live there are not many bookstores around. I used to live where there were MANY Stores. And I miss going to them, so I thought I would start this and maybe pick up some new book ideas. I just had to move into a new place and never took the time to do an inventory, so I am not using software that will do this for me and it is great if something bad happens and I need to hand something to the insurance company.
So what kind of books do you like to read? What are some of your favorties and what do you like to re-read?

Another good source for used books is your local library. Patrons who belong to book clubs, or buy from other places donate bags and bags of books, each month to most local libraries.

The libraries then pull from those donations what can be used in the collection, and host 'book sales' with the proceeds going back into the library.

A win/win for everyone.

If you decide to join, let me know. I get something for the referral.

And another way you can do it is now major bookstores are buying used books from libraries and re-selling them in the stores for around 3.99. Not bad for hardbacks. I have gotten many in great condition for being used.

Booksfree.com will also allow you to donate books that are on their list. You get one dollar credit that you can use to purchase new books. I know a dollar doesn't sound like much, but once you've read a book you've gotten your money's worth.

I recently bought a lot of 39 books on Ebay. With the shipping the total was a bit over $40.00. Thirty of the books are on bookfree's list, so the books only cost me $9!

Really? I may pass that along to my co-workers, we've never considered that option!

Yea there is a bookstore that is in another city and they do it and sell them for 3.99 and if you buy more then one, they have discounts. I have ended up buy a ton of books of new people I wanted to read. Some books that I wanted but didn't care to collect them, I have gotten some great steals on them. I know Books-a-million does it as well.

Cool DGO... I will check them out.

So what is everyone reading right now?

I have been reading Tim Green lately. I got his books at one of those library book sales in the bookstore.

He is pretty good. All are kind of suspense and thrillers. He is pretty good.

Right now I am reading Stuart Woods Iron Orchid. I also like James Patterson, his Alex Cross series, Mary Higgins Clark, her daughter Carol Higgins Clark, John Grisham and Mary Jane Clark, just to name a few. Yes I have read all the Harry Potter books. I find most of my books at flea markets as well as our local Library sells older books very cheap paperbacks for 50 cents to $1.00 hardbacks for $2.00.

I don't read suspense or thrillers. I read a lot of biographies/autobiographies, sci-fi, mystery and romance.

I have two very old dictionaries. One is from the 1800s. I used to take them to school for my students to see. They loved them.

I like the old maps, I've been resisting the urge to tear some out and frame them.......lol

Why not scan them and print them on paper that looks old, or dye the paper first with tea?

sadly my scanner hates vista.....finally got the printer to work though. They look plenty old the way they are......a good printer could reproduce the old look.

I need to go to antique's roadshow to see if it is worth anything......lol

Have you searched for new drivers for your scanner?

Great thread Spency - I tried to start a thread like this a while ago and it circled the drain for a bit before it disappeared. Hope you have better luck.

As for my favorite book ever - I have read and re-read and listened to the book on cassette about 3 times.....The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I wish someone would make a movie or mini-series out of it. Fantastic book - I wish I was half the writer Kingsolver is. (hmm if I were I wouldn't have ended that sentence with "is")
