Spelling

Just reflex for some of us. Not even effort involved, for most things.

I think it's a natural outgrowth (in my case) of being a self-taught reader by the age of three in a household of readers. I catch errors in published novels (a lot, especially in Incubus Dreams), newspapers (one issue had random letter Q's inserted one day), and of course in Internet posts and e-mails.

Gotta go with Octavian on this one, I can look at a page of text and my eyes instantly lock on the misspelled word. It seems to interrupt the whole flow of the document, almost daring the intrepid proofreader to call its bluff. What, you'll bring down the entire article for "too" instead of "to"?

I'm a wordfreak, so correct spelling is almost pathological to me. And no, I don't compose my posts in Word so I can spellcheck them. I don't have time to correct Word's errors.

But I see a different animal in a lot of posts (not necessarily here, mind you). A lack of comprehension, rather than craft. Idiots who write "weather or not"
(even a moron like me knows that weather is a noun, whereas whether is a comparitive, a suffix perhaps).

It just shows an appalling lack of comprehension to me, a lack of understanding of the basics of the language, let alone its many foibles. When someone can type "I had a feeling that would change you're mind" not even understanding the difference between "your" and "you're" ... well, it's just remarkable to me. Remarkable in the stupidity it displays.

Spelling errors are glaringly obvious to me. My husband notices though he isn't as bothered by them and our elementary school age children love to find the typos in print and gleefully point them out to all concerned.

I have to be careful at times not to equate spelling with intelligence. Often they do go together, but I have known brilliant people who happen to be non-spellers.

I can't stand to read - - - - its, it's, its' - - - - used improperly.
And (like Zack) - - - - your, you're - - - - weather, whether - - - - their, there, they're

It does make you wonder how people can actually write or type those and not know what they are doing.

Reading that makes me feel - dirty, somehow. ;)

I hold the same prejudice when I read other people's posts...I TRY to look at content rather than form, but it is difficult.

How about the PCs you'd love to edit? I have one on a poem that uses the word "wretching" (where she clearly meant "wrenching"). Drives me bat fuckin' bananas. I wanna FIX it!

I find it quite (or should I type Quiet?) easy to type funky words!

I truly DO know the diff...yet it happens...and, as stated before, I am a crappy typist...i use a modified two finger method and I am generally looking at the keyboard (sorta), such that I do not see the error until I look up. For posts I often DON'T proof...so that I can get my thought on screen in a timely manner (how about MANOR?) heheheehehe...

I'm a bad typist so funky words are my trend

Honestly, I spell better in almost every other language I know than in English. Not sure why

Yep.
It bugs me to see words splet incorrectly. Same wiht grammar. :D

Incorrect spelling detracts my attention from the script, and I quickly lose interest. If the author can't be bothered, why should I?

Read, read, read. It's the best way.

Aye! And for some it takes a little practice to not be completely anal about it, I guess. Much like controlling the gag-reflex. ;)
