Songs We Want To Write Stories About

Elevator music for me. Lots of Don Gibson's "Solitudes" CDs. But even with those, when I'm writing and put music on, it's finished and I don't notice it has until hours later. I get absorbed in the writing.

I'm that way too. In fact, I rarely turn music on when I'm writing because I know I won't listen to it anyway.

I've done quite a few with Jake Rivers, (also known as Diamond Jack) Mistress Lynn joined us for a few. Here are some of the ones I have done. Many of them were multiple part stories. I need peace and quite to think when writing these stories. The song goes around and around in my head.:)

Back Up Buddy!
Blue Eyes Crying

Cold, Cold, Heart
Crazy Arms

Detroit City

El Paso

For The Good Times

Maggie Mae
Mr. Lonely
My Way

Over The Rainbow

Puppy Love
Purple Rain

That's Life
The Bed of Roses
The Girl From Yesterday
The Green Green Grass of Home

When I Think About Cheatin'

You Don't Know Me
You Gave Me a Mountain

Sting and The Police have many songs that have strong narrative voices. The Police songs that I've always wanted to write stories about are
• Synchronicity II,
• Wrapped Around Your Finger,
• Driven to Tears,
• Don't Stand So Close to Me,
• Bring on the Night.

I would read these. Get started! ;-)

"Jackson" by Johnny Cash
"Baby It's Cold Outside" (the Ray Charles version). This is what I planned to do for the Christmas/Winter contest but it didn't happen.
"Allison" by Elvis Costello
About 20 songs by Wilco, including "Passenger Side," "She's a Jar," "I am Trying to Break Your Heart"
"Joey" by Concrete Blonde
"Almost Magic" by Syd Straw

I like "Caleb Meyer" by Gillian Welch would make a great story but I doubt it would get past Laurel.

Caleb Meyer, he lived alone
In them hollarin' pines
Then he made a little whiskey for himself
Said it helped pass the time

Long one evening in back of my house,
Caleb come around
And he called my name 'til I went out
with no one else around

Caleb Meyer, your ghost is gonna
wear them rattlin' chains.
but when I go to sleep at night,
Don't you call my name

Where's your husband, Nellie Kane
Where's your darlin gone?
Did he go down off the mountain side
and leave you all alone?

Yes, my husband's gone to Bowlin' Green
to do some business there.
Then Caleb threw that bottle down
and grabbed me by my hair.

Caleb Meyer, your ghost is gonna
wear them rattlin' chains.
but when I go to sleep at night,
Don't you call my name

He threw me in the needle bed,
across my dress he lay
then he pinned my hands above my head
and I commenced to pray.

I cried My God, I am your child
send your angels down
Then feelin' with my fingertips,
the bottle neck I found

I drew that glass across his neck
as fine as any blade,
and I felt his blood pour fast and hot
around me where I laid.

Caleb Meyer, your ghost is gonna
wear them rattlin' chains.
But when I go to sleep at night,
Don't you call my name

Caleb Meyer, your ghost is gonna
wear them rattlin' chains.
But when I go to sleep at night,
Don't you call my name

I've written stories around songs.

'Kelly's Moonlight Serenade' based on the swing hit by Glenn Miller.

'Lustful Lyrics Ch. 05' (Chain Story) based on 'From A Window' by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas.

Songs are excellent sources of inspiration for stories. :D

I believe I voted you up on those, Tom ;)

Secret pointed out a recent country song to me. "Two Black Cadillacs." I have to say I agree with her that it would make for a good erotic story. Cheating husband, wife and lover who conspire to kill him . . . good stuff.

I'm that way too. In fact, I rarely turn music on when I'm writing because I know I won't listen to it anyway.

I'm just the opposite. If my concentration level is good I can tone it down to classic rock or 80's and write just fine. But if I find my attention lacking, Pantera, Slayer and Carcass get my blood pumping and I work a lot better.

I think if I lived in my own place, not an apartment, I would have music on more. In the past, I had music on all the time. And often it was so loud I didn't hear things like the door bell, the phone, or someone talking to me. But this building is old. The people downstairs are retired and home all day. It was easier to stop listening to music than to have them complain and get kicked out.

Richard Thompson's song "1952 Vincent Black Lightning "

Spoilers-- he dies. ;)

But I wanted Molly to load the bike onto a ship and bring it to the USA.

Prince's song "Lady Cab Driver" is intriguing too. I'd want to explore that kind of frustration and anger maybe.

That's why I use headphones. I'm in no danger of being kicked out of my house, but I can jam whatever I want as loud as I like with out bothering anyone, or keeping my better half awake.

That would help, if I had some. ;)

Carcass, now that's some shit. I draw the line though at things like "cannibal corpse" when you can no longer understand the words that screws with me.

As odd as it sounds I have done some productive writing to some good old fifties music, the Drifters and Platters especially.

I thought about listing these songs too. I love Elvis Costello's version of "Let's Misbehave"

Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts — Bob Dylan

Yes. One of my all-time favorite Dylan songs. Although Joan Baez has a wonderful version of this song on her album From Every Stage, I prefer his version.

Tunnel of Love - Dire Straits

I almost listed this song specifically in my post for Dire Straits.

LOVE that song. Will now have it stuck in my head all night of course. Thanks Stella. <3

I agree. All terrific choices. I didn't even think of Prince. I'm so glad you mentioned him, Stella.

Just about anything Prince has recorded could be fodder for an erotic story. He's as descriptive in his prose as Sting but usually puts an erotic slant to it. A lot of his music has already been included in movies -- either his own or others -- which kind of makes me feel like they have already been adapted into their own stories away from the music.

yes, but-- not always in the direction he might have intended it...

Maybe, maybe not. As enigmatic as Prince is (especially when he was TAFKAP), one can never be sure if they are following the spirit of the song. But should we really try to? Music is art, and art is open to interpretation. You might look at a blank piece of paper framed an on a wall and think it represents the immortal human soul. I might look at it and think it's an empty white room in a snowstorm. Neither of us is right or wrong.

Okay, weird analogy, but I think you get my meaning. :p

Well that's kind of what I mean. it's not the song's words in every case, it's the person who wrote the words... Might know what they are talking about, might be totally fooling themselves... Might be flat out lying.

Those are the stories I think of.

If you haven't seen it, I recommend "graffiti bridge."

I have, actually, and I liked it. Strangely enough, I also liked Under a Cherry Moon. Of course, there was a time in which I would watch anything with Mia Sara in it . . . .

Funny you mention Cannibal corpse. I am related to one of the founding members of that band, I guess I am odd in a way cause I can usually pick the words out.
