The best thing about posting here on Lit is that I feel perfectly free expressing my enjoyment of each. :D

I find it interesting that all of the characters espousing the Beatles have more hair than those fighting for the Stones. Not sure it has any relevance to anything, but in my dotage such things happen.

And it's Moody Blues for the win.

In no particular order...
  • Joplin
  • Hendrix
  • Dylan
  • Bowie
  • Grace Slick
  • CCR
  • Aretha
  • The Who
  • KISS
  • Doors
  • Procol Harum
  • Zeppelin
  • Beatles
  • Stones
  • and more and more and more.
Too many, too good to ever pick a "best." They were so different, each almost deserves their own genre, or at least their own XM/Sirius channel.

I may look like I prefer the Stones, but my looks are misleading.

And yes, the Moodys were very much a favorite of mine, too. One of the innovative bands of the times.

While I agree with many of your choices, I have to say that the Beatles were the first to do so many things, both in the the recording process as well as prolific song writing.

This six part YouTube video with George Martin explains a little bit about how some of this innovation was realized. If you watch the whole thing, you'll see a little bit of a recording session, Beatles style. You don't notice many of the things they did in the final mix of the song, but the recording process had never been bastardized before. After all, there were standards. Who would think of such things?

The Beatles were very creative musicians, but pretty innocent of the stoic recording process. It was a process that was more or less set in stone. There were strict standards that all engineers were taught. But, because of their innocence, the Beatles weren't aware of these standards and Martin didn't try to squelch their desires for the unusual, or when they just wanted to know what something would sound like.

As for the other bands of the time, each had their own sound and many were first in their own ways, too, because it was very much a time of change for music. And much of the music of the 60s and 70s is forgotten, except for an occasional late night infomercial.

I'd like to add to the list:
  • Crosby, Stills, Nash and on occasion, Young
  • Cream (I know Clapton is already on the list)
  • James Gang (Joe Walsh before he was in the Eagles)
  • The Byrds
  • The Zombies
  • Ten Years After
  • Cat Stevens
  • Jim Croce
  • Gentle Giant
  • The Band
  • The Beach Boys
  • Buffalo Springfield
  • Traffic
  • and like you said...so many, many more

But always on the top of my list, even with today's excellent progressive rock musicians...The Beatles. And if you were to ask those excellent progressive rock musicians I know of, The Beatles would be on the top of their list, too.

Love the cartoon!

God, even Devo and David Byrne make me feel as old as those guys in the pic.

Boomers bug me because they talk about how they had the best music, and they're RIGHT. Only, they often ignored it, like every other generation.

I love a contrarian and an unsung genius. Always have.

The other issue I have with those Beatles/Stones arguments is that the stuff that fucks shit up and changes everything you thought about music isn't what you want to put on in your car and drive to. Seriously. I think "Day in the Life" is the greatest thing the Beatles ever did - how many of you drive around to it?

1966. John Lennon is getting in trouble for the Jesus Comment. Hendrix releases Hey Joe. The first episode of the Monkees is on TV.

As rock begins to make fun of itself on TV, the Velvet Underground release the banana album. Punk begins with all 25 amphetamine addicts who notice.

The Monks do the same thing in Germany at the same second in time. It's '66. Everyone else loves their baby.

This is my second favorite thing ever from the decade. Totally not weird just sweet overlooked soul.

As far as mainstream stuff, I think the Weight by The Band is one of those mysteriously spiritual things that cause me to select "agnostic" on the checkboxes still. My best of the best, but what a pack to pick from.

OMG!!!

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters I've written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty I'd always missed....
