You didn't catch all of the story. The slug has far more options than just a removable penis. Aside from the fact that the penis breaks off every time and grows back, these slugs have both male and female sex organs. They position themselves in opposite angles to each other (similar to the 69 position) and during the same sex act they give each other sperm. Also, with that penis, they can remove any sperm that has been recently deposited by a competitor slug.

I agree that the procreative brilliance of evolution should be celebrated and marveled at.
