So what do you think about boxing?

When my great grandfather first came to this country he used to fight nickel fights on gambling boats that rode the Mississippi (the Irish were not considered job worthy in Boston to say the least), so I have a certain amount of respect for the origins of the sport if only because it's part of my roots.

But, essentially boxing is two men in a ring being paid to hurt one another as much as possible in an allotted time for entertainment value.

If you fight on the streets you are arrested no matter how many people are enjoying the battle.

Personally I've never enjoyed it. I find it barbaric (I know I'm going to get slammed for that) and kind of sick. Not just the fighters but the patrons. I don't understand the fun in watching people make one another bleed.

Now I know fighting is inevitable in the other contact sports I love like Football and Hockey, but it's not the point of the game. It's the point of a boxing match. Hurt him as much as you can, make him bleed, knock him unconscious.

Hey! Look at those cows fucking over there.

WHAM!!

Ya know! Watch ONE little bovine mating ritual and you're all of a sudden a cow porn fettishist. lol

Actually, I am with you on this one. I have a tough time watching it without getting bored. I think that the sport lost quite a bit of credibility when Tyson was allowed back.

I may be a bad person to judge though - I also find it quite boring to watch cars drive around in circles at really high speeds.

Jerry Quarry
Age: 53

popular heavyweight boxer who fought former champions Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali; earned $2.1 million as a top contender in the 1960s and 70s; fought Ali when he returned from his banishment from boxing on Oct. 26, 1970; suffered from "dementia pugilistica," a type of brain damage that resembles Alzheimer's disease and is caused by repeated blows to the head. He died of cardiac arrest after his family directed doctors to remove him from life support.
Died: Templeton, Calif., January 3, 1999. This pretty much sums up my "feelings":(

Ok. Back on task here.

Boxing is a sport. The participants agree to a set of rules. The spectators know what it is all about. If you dont like to see it, dont watch. Same with football, bowling, or nose picking.

Ok welcome to a discussion my luv. It's not about whether or not you can ignore it. Of course you can. The point is to talk about why you would ignore it or why you like it.

I want to know what the draw is.

It's a sport that's past its time. A lot of people these days only see the violence and boxing does not attract the great athletes that it did in it's prime. Don King didn't help, either.

I lost interest in boxing in the early 90s when the heavyweight division became an old-timers league. You know the sport was in trouble when Tyson came along and there was no one that could even compete with him.

I never really had an issue with the violence. In a lot of ways boxing reduces sport to its most basic level - a one-on-one match up of strength, speed and stamina.

Funny as it sounds, the boxers, both professional and amatuer that I know all say the same thing. The sport in it for them is the ability to avoid getting hit. Its probably a rationalization, but so is denial of the fact that evolutionarily speaking, we are an animal which fights.

But, but without boxing, poor Sly Stallone would be homeless. Just another reason to hate the sport.

Why would anyone enjoy watching cows fuck? ( :D ) If you like it then watch it. Boxing may be barbaric. It is also the ultimate judge of strength and endurance. There are no teamates to carry you if you are off of your game.

I personally dont like boxing. I think it is boring. Real men play hockey. Everybody knows that.

here ya go sunny...now cum to the man in the straw hat...

So it's dangerous then, is that it? Well sex is dangerous too, with STD's like AIDS out there. So if you want to ban boxing on the grounds that it is dangerous then you have to ban sex too, both are activities done by consenting adults.

The point to boxing is not to "hurt" your opponent, but to win. There is a points system to it that the judges usually refer to in order to declare a winner.

People who want to ban boxing are no better no matter what their supposed political affiliation then the Bible-thumpers who want to outlaw homosexuality.

I am sick of the "Nanny State" mentality, if you don't like something then don't watch it, no one is forcing you to see it. Our country is a much better place without other nosy people trying to be some kind of Morality Police for us.

In total serious injuries sports like Football probably have far more injuries then boxing does.

Good News, CBS is thinking of televising boxing again.

There is a reason boxing is called "boxing" and not "fighting", they are two different things and any aficionado know that.

What a stupid fucking argument!

So, in your eyes, the object of sex is to inflict disease on your partner? The object of boxing is to inflict injury on your opponent. It is the only so-called sport that actually encourages opponents to damage each other.

Your reference to Bible Thumpers and homosexuality doesn't even bear comment.

And whilst other contact sports (played by greater numbers) may have more serious injuries they are not generally inflicted on purpose and not normally brain injuries.

Edited to add.... and yes I have watched and enjoyed boxing most of my life but no longer.

I'll chip in. If there was ever anyone in need of sex, it'd be him.

I never watch boxing, I dont' see the attraction, and watching Muhammed Ali hobble up to light that damn flame just solidified my feelings on the matter. Why anyone would willingly involve themselves in a sport designed to make your brain bounce off your skull is beyond me. But as for the lasting damage of boxing - apparently football players are at almost as much risk of things like Parkinson's etc due to brain damage.

I think anyone listening to Muhammad Ali in his prime and hearing him now would have to agree with this.

Was it so different then? I mean, the elements were the same right? I'm not saying that boxers don't work hard to become professional or that they aren't athletic, but I'm not sure I consider them athleats as I'm not sure I consider boxing a sport.

I think it was seen more in it's raw, base form 80 years ago when it was admitedly all about gambling and blood.

I wept the last time I saw him on television.

The supreme athlete (voted sports personality of the millenium in the UK) reduced to such a state.
