So depressing.

Oh crap, we lost?!?

Poor, tootoo, #22

Oh well, at least the niners won today :D

I'm sorry - at which point did anyone say that's all they can offer the world? But, if you train your entire life, spending hours and hours, and tons of money to get to a point, and then come up a little short at that last second, it's human nature to be disappointed.

Islandman - yeah, those were playing tonight too. But most of the people were watching the hockey.

Perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying, but Azwed said the kids had other things to offer the world, and your response "Such as?" would seem to imply that you feel differently.

Believe me, I know what it's like to train for something since childhood, to put everything you have into it, work three jobs to cover the costs that your parents couldn't cover, and then not make it to the top of the sport, like you'd dreamed. I'm not saying it isn't heartbreaking. All I'm saying is, the guys should know that there are other things in life.

Good gracious! Football and hockey!

Well, that would explain why everyone ignored my thread about something truly entertaining.

http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=140338

Of course, I didn't feel the need to be rude to people for not going to see it.

Freya, maybe some of us just don't like (gasp!) hockey. ;) It really has nothing to do with nationalism or patriotism. I think Canada is a fine country despite that. And it is home to some fine people.

But, don't mind me. This is just a blatant plug for my thread.

I wish I had a dozen or so great pairs of tix to the Predators to give you so we could review your position in say March.

I didn't say hockey wasn't cool.

Freya's disbelief that Americans aren't on the edge of their seat about a junior hockey tournament struck me as a little silly is all.

The old "You Americans are soooooo blinkered" argument taken to it's extreme.

Like someone else said, the NFL playoffs are on, and the Steelers beat the Browns in another nailbiter today.

I'm sure the hockey is great fun for the kids, but I wouldn't have turned off that Steelers game to watch the public stoning of Anna Nicole Smith.

Hmm. I think you should forward that idea on to her people as a Pay Per View. Make millions.

No, it was an honest question to him. He stated that if they were that good, they could do other things - I was trying to see how he figured skill in a sport was automatically transferrable to other endeavours. Not to say that some, if not all, wouldn't be able to put that focus and drive to other pursuits, but the way he phrased it struck me odd, that's all.

Apparently I need to use smilies more often, so that others can understand when a joke was intended. Seems that many miss it unless it's explicitly stated. Agent99 - I'd think that the high numbers of season tickets sold every year would discount the idea that people dont like hockey. But maybe, like I said, it's of more interest to those citizens of the countries that are playing.

PC - I don't expect that everyone would be on the edge of their seats about this game, but some people prefer hockey over football, and I thought possibly that some might have been watching today.

That's a good idea.

You're one of the foremost America bashers here. It'll help us sort out when you're serious and when you're joking.

Am I an American basher, or a Canadian defender? Seems to me around here that if you have pride in your country, it's automatically taken as disliking the US. I've stated a hundred times that I like the states very much - I just happen to prefer the country I live in. And some of my comments to that effect include reasons why I feel this way, which gets Americans up in arms, because they also prefer their own country. It flows both ways, I think.

Regardless, this isn't about US vs Canada. It was just a thread about kids and disappointment.

:)

Understood. Hockey certainly runs a distant 4th to fball, bball and baseball in the US.

Interestingly, Canadian women get even more crazed about hockey rivalries than men.

There is no more dangerous critter than a Hockey Mom when her golden boy gets a penalty.

Let's just say you tend to defend Canada with "extreme prejudice".

To put it another way, you are the busybody of Canada defenders.

I think it was depressing that this tournament even took place at all. There's nothing quite so disgusting as a group of adults putting children in a position where their competition ever becomes something more than childhood fun, learning, and fun. Children's extra-curricular sports should never get beyond the local level in competition.

Was the game even on in the states? I don't remember ever seeing a Junior Hockey game on TV here.

And you really can't expect Americans to pick Junior Hockey over the NFL Playoffs. Hell, it's the Playoffs... The Playoffs took 5 seconds and made it... ... ... 5 seconds.

OMG. Honestly, there really is a world outside of the United States. I wouldn't lie to you. Check an atlas if you don't believe me.

There was a Junior Hockey Championship gold medal game on. Did nobody seriously watch it?

I thought maybe you were talking about chess. Honestly there is a life outside of sports.

No kidding. When my little brother used to play hockey - some of those parents were just nutso. Screaming and yelling at the poor kids - swearing at the refs - whackos, the lot of them.

Sure PC, whatever. What's the matter, Mia not around for you to troll tonight?

KM - that would apply to the Olympics and every other junior level sporting event then? Most of those athletes are even younger than these hockey players. At 18 or 19, some of these guys will be playing in the NHL soon. Of course, you'd have to eliminate college football too then.

Though Freya has described them as kids, these guys are university aged young men, 18-19 mostly.

Not that much younger than many here.

Who watched that game? I see the faces of those poor players, and it's so sad. They really are just babies at that age, and their disappointment is so obvious.

Fucking Russians making our boys cry. ;)

The Canucks didn't win?

Cue the applause track.

I agree. When kids' sports are taken to the kind of extreme that second in a huge championship game no longer seems like winning, there's a problem.

Freya, I understand that the thread was about kids and disappointment. But really, those 'kids' are 18 or so, right? They ought to be able to lose gracefully, and realize that second still isn't shabby. When I was competing, even at a semi-local level, when I took second, I was happy about it. If I'd cried about it, my trainer would have pulled me off of my horse and kicked my ass.

Ok, I'll try this one more time.

1) What I term kids were 17 or 18 yr old boys - sorry, but to me that's still a kid.

2) They lost quite gracefully, it was just sad to see them standing there with those looks of disappointment on their faces. Nobody threw a tantrum or was a sore loser - it was just sad to watch. Much like any group of people that have just seen the highlight of their athletic lives - to that point anyways - slip out of their grasp.

3) There are hundreds of other sports besides hockey - and there are millions of other things in life besides sports. It just so happened that I watched this game tonight, and wondered if anyone else had as well. It was exciting, and it's fun to cheer for your country - whether it be in hockey or the World Scrabble competition.

4) No, I'm not depressed - just amazed at how a thread about a game can become so argumentative. Especially when it's such a non important event to so many.

5) I'd think that second in an event like this wouldn't seem like a win to anyone, regardless of age. I remember the same looks on the men's and women's hockey teams in the Olympics last year - as well as plenty of other times in the past. When you're fighting for gold, silver - at that moment - just isn't enough.

It's disappointing they lost. I'd bet they'd beat the Russians 2 out of 3 times, the Russians just had their number tonight.

As for the Team being upset, wouldn't any of you be? You put years and years into the game, and you lose the biggest test you've faced so far? They'll all get over it, and likely be stronger and better for it, but given the moment it'd be wierd to watch them all smiley faced, wouldn't it?

Bottom line is...when you're 17 or 18, and you're playing a sport, and its the big show, and you're on center stage...you loose, no matter WHAT, it hurts.

Junior year in highschool, we went to our Superbowl, the state championship. We were undefeated, we were on top of our game, and we lost. It was all over the papers. It was brutal. And it hurt. When you put THAT much time, energy, invest so much physically and emotionally, it will hurt, badly. Imagine watching a company that you built from the ground up, having it be the most successful company around, burn to the ground in front of your eyes. Thats how it feels.

to kids of that age, its all they care about. Hell, to SOME professional athletes, all they want is to win, to be the best. Notice, i said some, not all, because a large group of atheletes are fucking asshole greedy bastards. But some actually still care.

The only thing i can liken it to is the Little League world series in the States. Its what you always dream of...and then you dont get to grab the brass ring.

Now, that statement about the US? Not winning the Bronze? that was just plain mean. Then again, in Canada, all you canuks have are hockey, that foolish indoor football crap, and curling. :D

Thank you Eagle and DT for actually getting it.

Eagle, that was just in fun. We love to beat the US, and the US loves to beat us. It'll be the same come time for the World Championships again - but this time there'll be an Olympic gold to avenge.
