Who watched that game? I see the faces of those poor players, and it's so sad. They really are just babies at that age, and their disappointment is so obvious.

Fucking Russians making our boys cry. ;)

OMG. Honestly, there really is a world outside of the United States. I wouldn't lie to you. Check an atlas if you don't believe me.

There was a Junior Hockey Championship gold medal game on. Did nobody seriously watch it?

Hell, I know folks that wonder if there is life west of the Hudson.

Umm did the Canadian team lose, then?

Awww Damn.

Yes, they pretty much got their asses handed to them. 2-1 after the 2nd period, I was holding out some hope for them - but the Russkies were all over them in the 3rd. 3-2 was the final score.

It's just sad seeing their faces as they stand there accepting their medals. Eyes are blinking furiously, chins wobbling - you just know they want to cry. The whole nation sets their hopes on these guys, and really they're just kids. 17 or 18 yrs old.

The only consolation was the USA lost the bronze medal today.

I think the only shame is in a breed of competitor that cannot celebrate a Silver Medal in World competition.

In the past 15 years, the Russians & Canadians have won the Gold at World Juniors 12 times.

They are the two dominant junior hockey programs in the world from the world's two dominant hockey countries in a rivalry that extends back to 1972.

The last time the Russians lost a World Junior hockey match was 10 games ago in last year's tournament....to Canada.

They have one hot fucking hockey team. That Grigorenko cat is arguably the best young hockey player in the world and is First Round #1 draft pick for the NHL this year.

No shame in losing to them 3-2. It was a great game.

I sure like that Jordin Tootoo....if Ken Dryden has any brains at all, he'll snap him up in next year's draft or buy him. He's a marquee crowd pleaser in the making to replace an aging Ty Domi ....most goals, assists and penalty minutes on his team this year...he's Tiger Williams, Ty Domi, Eddy Shack & Clarkie all in one. What a kid, what a story, what a Canadian.

That's what's depressing.

Agrees. Its just hockey and these kids do have their whole lives ahead of them.

Waiting for retorts phrased like, "you wouldn't say that if it was football/baseball."

That's not a shame Lance. When they're in this type of competition, there's only one goal. As they see it that moment, they failed to reach a goal. After some time has passed, I'm sure they'll be more than happy with the silver medal, but the emotions are so high right then that they just can't see it.

MG - that's just the way it is. As in any sport, or national competition, the whole nation supports them, cheers for them and suffers their losses alongside them.

Funny, that same look of sadness and defeat was on the USA team's faces when they lost to us the other day. :)

I imagine you'll see a whole lot of that Russian team playing in the NHL soon as well.

Azwed - any athlete that gets to that level has dedicated their lives to their sport. It's irrelevant if it's football, hockey or bobsledding. Their life ahead of them, for many, will consist of playing that sport for insane amounts of money at a professional level.

Yes but it is still just a sport. I mean not too terribly important in the grand scheme of things. Those guys will have other chances to do great things if they are that good.

Such as?

It must be fairly important to lots of people. I mean sure, they aren't going to cure cancer playing on a hockey rink, but they provide entertainment to millions of people.

And regardless of their age, anytime you put that much heart into anything, there will be a huge let down once it's over.

There really are other things besides hockey.

Other sports even.

At 18 or 19 years old, learning about winning...and losing... is a critical life lesson that comes from the game.

Only a handful of those kids will play NHL and arguably representing your country at the Worlds is a bigger deal than the NHL, which is Barnum & Bailey US hockey, like it or not, and has been since WWII.

As for Euro NHL careers, most of those Russians will never get to The Show. Grigorenko and one or two others, tops. They and the Finns, followed by the Swedes, play that cheesey brand of hacking/diving hockey that gets your ass kicked in the bigs...check your draft stats, they get passed over now.

Did you see that Russian kid withering on the ice and crawling to the bench to try and draw a penalty? He was out the next shift and nearly scored.

Pussies. I hate that acting shit.

Don Cherry should have been there.

You mean the Raiders arent a hockey team?

And I was SURE Gretzky played for em in the 80's too

No really??! ;)

I was just a bit amazed that nobody seemed to know about that game. Even if the US wasn't in it, I'd have thought some people would have watched it. Maybe it truly is a patriotic thing - only countries directly involved pay attention.

Freya, why the need for USA bashing, or rather, being happy over their loss? I don't get it.

Beavis and Butthead provide entertainment to millions of people.

The point, I think, is that if all these kids feel like they can offer the world is some time on the ice, that's pretty fuckin sad.

It's not a personal thing against the US Celia. It'd be no different if my NHL team lost, but their foes also lost too. Canada vs USA is a big rivalry - so to me, I'm glad we made it farther.

Lance, I'm sure tomorrow we'll hear the tired old spiel "We're just so happy we made it this far", and frankly they did extremely well throughout the tourny, and to get to that match is a huge deal, but I still think at that moment, you can't expect that anyone would be jumping up and down in glee over placing 2nd.

I wish I had a dozen or so great pairs of tix to the Predators to give you so we could review your position in say March.

I'm sorry - at which point did anyone say that's all they can offer the world? But, if you train your entire life, spending hours and hours, and tons of money to get to a point, and then come up a little short at that last second, it's human nature to be disappointed.

Islandman - yeah, those were playing tonight too. But most of the people were watching the hockey.
