No threads on this?

The United States confirmed that it has filed a sealed criminal complaint against Edward Snowden, the former contract worker for the National Security Agency who has admitted giving away classified information about previously undisclosed programmes to monitor telephone and internet traffic for possible terrorist threats.

In a dramatic new turn in the latest whistleblower saga that began with Mr Snowden spiriting himself away to Hong Kong and then choosing two newspapers, the Guardian and the Washington Post, to air what he claimed were the “criminal activities” of the US government in snooping on its own private citizens as well as foreigners, the Department of Justice said it was charging the 30-year-old with espionage and theft of government property.

We survived World Wars I and II and the Cold War threat without the need for the government to violate our Constitutional rights. In comparison "terrorism" is a pin prick on an elephant. The government isn't spying on you because its trying to stop "terrorism." Its spying on you because it wants to create a climate of fear and compliance among its subjects.

Are they really going to throw this guy into Supermax? Won't this cause too much public outrage?

The Patriot Act doesn't violate Constitutional rights, as all Constitutional tests against it have failed.

Earlier the question was hero or villain.

Now it changes to criminal or martyr.

I think the American public should be aware of this.

But Snowden wasted his time.

This country is populated by cattle who will let the Government do anything they want as long as it does not effect their facebook time or interrupt any of their reading about D-bag West and Kim sluts new baby.

If you really believe this you should be charged with Naivety.

You didn't know you were being watched?

lol

So the Internment Camps were Constitutional?

There is already a climate of fear, an underseved one but one nonetheless.

To be fair if the government stays away from my Facebook time and my reading about Kanye and Kim then it's not really interrupting me and can carry on about whatever it's doing. I'll neither notice nor care if people shut up and stop whining about it. It's not like we didn't already know we were being watched, just the government let us in on the secret. I don't support it, I don't like it, but ultimately I'd just as happily go back to pretending I don't see shit that I can't really stop anyway.

Exactly.

Tell that to the Japanese Americans interned during WW2. Or the Americans persecuted by McCarthy and HUAC.

So... my point is that there's not going to be any public outrage if he's tossed in the pokey.

yes we should toss Obama in prison

when you poll ignorant MSNBC slobs....well you end up with a fucked up poll.

the kind of Poll that SeanH loves to sit on

That doesn't make it right.......

I'll bet you're wearing a "USA #1" t-shirt right now.

Merc has wet dreams over an iron fisted police state.

Oh look!! It's Merc porn!!

Fine, it's unconstitutional because that's what our feelings are saying.

Doesn't make it unconstitutional, but nothing good has ever come out of letting a government spy and bomb it's own people. No matter how big of a chubby it gives you.... Just sayin....

I never liked the Patriot Act, and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.

Both reeked of the beginning of a police state.

The term Homeland reminds me of another term, Fatherland.

Homeland Security reminds me of the Gestapo.

Totally agree with this.

No, it supersedes our rights and changes them into privileges granted by government. If you want privacy - you can choose privacy by forgoing modern communications, modern travel and by using your own electricity generated on your own property with gasoline refined from your home oil well - anything else allows the government to monitor your activities for 'security'.

And if you do all of those, they'll monitor your activities as a 'Fringe Group'.

Yep, and as long as they're in place, presidents are gonna use them.

Power corrupts, and all that.
