The simpler explanation is they knew then and didn't care, but later had personnel changes and/or policy changes to abandon partisan loyalties, cut losses, or try to regain credibility as a fact checking site.

The simplest answer is there was NO reason to point this out. We all knew what Trump did say and what he meant were close enough to the same thing. That both groups were equal morally speaking.

If this fucker can't so much as succinctly explain himself 7 years after the fact then that seems more like a "him" problem than an "us" problem. If Trump would just come out and say something along the lines of "all Nazis deserve to die and Joe Biden should kill them all," I'm sure we would leave him alone. Or, if we don't leave him alone, we'll at least maybe quit seeing him as a Nazi collaborator and hoping that, come the revolution, he and his whole rotten family receive their rightful punishment.

It just amazes me how those folks can offer up two opinions on or explanations for something that are mutually exclusive, then perform the sort of mental gymnastics that would make Simone Biles jealous to rationalize their thinking. At least to themselves.

It's interesting that you bring up Occam's razor. Because I realized a while back that the MAGA mindset is the opposite of that philosophy. The answer or solution always has to be the least likely, most convoluted option possible.

MAGA is kind of like the guys on Ancient Aliens. If an architectural achievement seems too advanced for an ancient civilization, it's not that we just haven't yet found all their tools and plans, their actual capabilities, but it must have been aliens from the Proxima Centauri system, who generated a wormhole to come to Earth, shapeshifted into gods and pharaohs, and used anti-gravity and directed energy weapons to build the Egyptian pyramids.

That's how MAGA explains everything. The least likely, most convoluted explanation possible.

The Unite the Right rally placed Trump in an awkward situation because rightists on both sides supported him, and he did not want to alienate either side.

The Unite the Right failed to unite the right, because the torch light parade and the slogan "Jews won't replace us" were obviously reminiscent of the Nazis.

Protest demonstrators for any cause should not be aiming at self expression; they should be trying to win support for their cause.
