have you ever had a song ever get to you emotionally

Only are 4 for me. They even choke me up when I sing them. Maybe that is because two of them I sing to my lady!

Break it to Them Gently- Burton Cummings
Lady- Kenny Rogers
She Believes In Me- Kenny Rogers
The baseball song- Kenny Rogers

I Can't Make You Love Me -- Bonnie Raitt

Most any version of You'll Never Walk Alone

Toast - Tori Amos

I raise a glass
Make a toast
A toast in your honor
I hear you laugh and beg me not to dance
And on the right
Standing by
Is Mr. Bojangles
With a toast
He's telling me it's time
To let you go

forgot a couple

i can't believe I forgot:

Green Green Grass
agree with You'll Never Walk Alone (I loved Elvis)

and being in the military

Arlington is an amazing tragic song...heartfelt and proud

Well, being a singer means learning not to cry while you sing. I've had many occasions where I've had to overcome emotion associated with a song in order to perform. So, I've learned to divorce my personal emotions while singing, and yet you have to tap into that to perform with any believablility.

So, there aren't many songs that will make me cry, or get even a lump in my throat. That doesn't mean I don't have an emotional attachment or response to many hundreds of songs, though!

The Star-Spangled Banner (if it's sung right)
I'm Proud To Be An American by Lee Greenwood (they get everyone with that one in boot-camp)
Amazing Grace by Soul Stirrers
A lot of songs by Sam Cooke
Stand By Me by Ben E King
What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
The End by The Doors
Linger by The Cranberries
China Girl by David Bowie
The World In My Eyes by Depeche Mode
Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana
Better Life by 3 Doors Down
Life of My Own also by 3 Doors Down
It's Been Awhile by Staind
Like a Stone by audioslave

And a bunch of other songs; music is very powerfully connected to recalling good and bad experiences for me as I'm sure it is to others.

Concrete Angel & Independence Day, both by Martina McBride
What A Wonderful World ~ Louis Armstrong
The Lee Greenwood mentioned above
Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning ~ Alan Jackson
Hallelujah ~ Jeff Buckley
The Show Must Go On ~ Queen

A large number of songs, far too many to list here, make me cry simply because of the memories associated with them.

I have a lot of emotions that aren't tears associated with songs.

"Everybody wants to rule the world" by Tears for Fears reminds me of my first tour through college, and makes me want to return to academia and get my second degree. I used it to push me through my second tour to get my BA.

Ya know, I'm not a country fan, but "The Dance" by Garth Brooks gets me every damn time.

ETA: Oh yeah . . . and "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle.

There's a recent country song "Skin"

Rascal Flatts - Skin
Sarah Beth is scared to death
To hear what the doctor will say
She hasn't been well
Since the day that she fell
And the bruises just won't go away
So she sits and see waits with her mother and dad
Flips through an old magazine
Till the nurse with a smile
Stands at the door
And says will you please come with me

Sarah Beth is scared to death
Cause the doctor just told her the news
Between the red cells and white
Something's not right
But we're gonna take care of you

Six chances in ten it won't come back again
With the therapy we're gonna try
It's just been approved
It's the strongest there is
I think we caught it in time

Sarah Beth closes her eyes
She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And the soft wind is blowing her hair

Sarah Beth is scared to death
As she sits holding her mom
Says it would be a mistake
For someone to take
A girl with no hair to the prom

Oh, just this morning right there on her pillow
Was the cruelest of any surprise
And she cried when she gathered it all in her hands
The proof that she couldn't deny

Sarah Beth closes her eyes
She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And the soft wind is blowing her hair

It's a quarter to 7
That boy's at the door
Her daddy ushers him in
And when he takes off his cap
They all start to cry
Cuz this morning where his hair had been
Softly she touches just skin

They go dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first true love is holding her close
And for a moment she isn't scared

Only one, but you haven't heard it. It's one I wrote. An instrumental called "Broken Again". I almost couldn't finish writing it. I'm glad I did, though.

Well, the ice-cream man song is playing right now and makes me want to jump up and go get one!

Seriously - sure - but it depends when and in what mood. I think for sad songs that are sad in themselves -

And aside from ALL Leonard Cohen songs ... :D - there is one Nathalie Merchant song - one Everlast song, and ...

Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls - when I actually listen to the lyrics and repetative chorus. :)

And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - The Pogues

Patriot's Dream - Gordon Lightfoot

Operator - Jim Croce

Song Of Bernadette - Leonard Cohen

Brother spirt! That's a damned fine song. They often get me with "Lorelei" as well - such a piece of poetry.

The Pogues, again - "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day." I've got several folk this brings to mind with bittersweet sensation.

Leonard Cohen!!! YES!

ok and I'm going to shamefully admit: The Rose (Bette Midler)

Imagine- any version
Daughters-John Mayer... EVERY damned time! WAHHHH!
In Your Eyes & I Grieve- Peter Gabriel
This Woman's Work-Kate Bush (which crosses over to movies that make me cry: "She's Having a Baby.")
Tears From Heaven - Eric Clapton... written about losing his child :( wahhhhhh
Levon - Elton John ... I don't even UNDERSTAND this song and it makes me cry!

Songs my mom listened to when I was a kid that will still make me cry:
I Got a Name - Jim Croce
In the Ghetto - Elvis... I can't help it!!
Traveling Salvation Show - Neil Diamond
Killing me softly - (anyone's version)

So many. Some due to the beauty of the melody. Some due to the poignant lyrics. Some due to the memories associated with them.

A few ...

Sunrise, Sunset (from Fiddler on the Roof)
Pachelbel's Canon in D
You'll Never Walk Alone
I Don't Know How to Love Him (from JCS)
Somewhere (from West Side Story)
Can't Help Falling in Love (UB40 cover) & Faith Hill's Breathe ... simply because I used to sing them to my son when his very survival was in question
