Hi Snork Maiden and BadAndyNVegas. Thanx for both voting.

Snork Maiden? That reminds me of my childhood. Isn't the Snork Maiden a character from the Moomin Trolls ? I'll have to check my bookshelves.......I know I still have a book somewhere......

Oh, and thanx Midas..huggggssssss

Hi Sienna, thx for the welcome.

Yes, Snork Maiden was Moomin Troll's girlfriend. They have a Moomin Valley theme park in Finland which I hope I will be able to visit next year 2003.

Its built on a island just like in the books :)

I think I saw in a post here somethink about American's being more frustrated. Please don't judge us on what you see on the Jerry Springer Show - ( :/ that is such and embrassing show)

Yessssss!

Snork Maiden.......

I found it!.......I must have been 7 years old the last time I read it.

I don't judge Americans through Jerry Springer. Us Brits can be just as "crazy", only we tend to be more reserved in letting it show. Well......we are learning to chill a bit at the moment..:)

I judge Americans on their strength, fairness and diplomacy, even though they can make mistakes sometimes. That can not be denied. There are examples which I will not go into.

Thanx for sharing your interest in The Moomins.

Midas..

Midas, I'm glad you're OK, sorry to get your hopes up like that. I don't know much of the geography of England outside of the major cities. I did drive through most of England when I was younger (with a family from Switzerland). I've been to London on Business several times in the last few years, but not been outside of London. I'll have to refresh by looking at a map later today.

I saw your description Sie, it sounds lovely. What English novels have been set in that area? What are some of the famous landmarks that are there? What is the most interesting aspect of that geographic area? What famous historical events took place there?

I live next to a Civil War battlefield called "Bull Run" (bye the north) or "Manassas" (by the south). There were two relatively large battles here, neither of them pivotal or particularly bloody, but they are both well known. There was one minor battle here too. The Jamestown site (Pocahontas et al) is about 2 hours drive from here too. 2 hours is a long way in the UK, but it's just around the corner here. Washington DC is just down the road, but you're probably already familiar with DC. Have you visited?

I grew up in Fairfield County, CT, same general location as Snork. It's just outside of NYC. Fairfield County has rolling (rocky) hills and thick forests, mountain streams and beaches.

LovetoGiveRoses.........

I would love to visit the US one day. Infact we are planning on visiting Orlando in Florida soon.

My area is a national park known as the Peak District. It is tourist area because of its geography which is famous for its caverns and hidden away lakes and gills (mountain streams).

Its history is not very interesting apart from the fact that there were lots of Roman garrisons around. And novelists? Well, my favourite, DH Lawrence was a very good friend of my great grandfather. Most of his novels were based around an area further south of the peak district, such as Lady Chatterley and The Rainbow, but still in the same Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire counties. I was nearly born in the farmhouse that Lawrence once used to stay and visit quite often.

The two main cities are Sheffield and Manchester to which the district lies between. And just south of where I live is Buxton Spa, famous for its Roman baths and natural spring water.

Another Brit here!!!

Born and raised in the north of England I became part of the brain-drain and now live and work in and around London...

great idea. I'm surprised such a high proportion come from the UK - USA much as expected but I had thought there would be more from Canada than UK. So I'll feel less on my own now. Like your contributions to lots of threads. I know the Peak District you come from pretty well, and admire DHL, though I come from Northumberland and live in London.

Thanks Sie,

Thanks for the "picture" of your area. You know, I haven't read much D.H. Lawrence, I'll have to read some. I went to an all boys school in Masschusetts modeled on the English college model (forms and prefects and the whole bit) and D. H. Lawrence wasn't on the required reading lists for some reason. :( Being an all boys school, putting Lady Chatterly's lover on the reading list would have probably caused a bit too much turmoil for the old place (think of all the raging hormones 300 teenage boys can raise). I'll think of you when I read Lawrence now. :)

I'm intrigued by the Roman garrisons. Of course I've visited Hadrian's wall and have read a bit about the Roman occupation. I've recently finished reading "Serum" by Rutherford and it briefly covered the occupation. I'm going to Rome next month to poke around the forum for a while and learn more of ancient Rome.

Orlando's a fun place to visit. Don't go there in the late fall or mid-summer. The fall is full of rain and the summer is a bit warm and humid. If you ever make to to DC, you and your SO are welcomed to stay.

Hi Sienna, i'm a new member born in Montreal lived there 15yrs then moved to Toronto Ontario. I also got to say u r one beautiful lady;)

Sienna

I may live in the US but I'm a big fan of Coronation Street.

Two of the best weeks of my life was in 1997 when I traveled to the UK and visited the places of my family origins...primarily Plymouth, Mevagissey in Cornwall, and Caithness in Scotland. Saw a lot of beautiful countryside from the train. There were many times I wanted to forget our itinerary and just jump off the train at the next stop...particularly in the north of England, like the Lake District.

Someday... :)

Thank you for voting shycanadian :)

Rothgar....The Lake District, yet another national park like the Peak District is a beautiful area. Unfortunately during the recent foot and mouth epidemic, the Lake District and Exmoor were hard hit and suffered the loss of tourism.

The Peak District however did well in escaping major outbreaks.

The UK's national parks provide a lot of romantic ambience.

Hello Sie, long time no see. How have you been? School going OK? Been seeing more of Julianna since she's come back into your life? Anything fun going on?

It's a quiet weekend here in DC. Just when we were becoming hopeful that the winter migth be over early, we got another cold front. It's going to get down below freezing again tonight. We had such warm weather that my forsythia have started to bloom ( a month early). I got a little bit of sniffles and I want to keep it from growing into a full blown cold cause I'd hate for it get in the way of travel plans in March. It's a good excuse to huddle up under a warm blanket and watch the Olympics.

The Olympics are on TV for three or four hours a night here, are they being shown that much there too?

Hi LoveToGiveRoses. Sorry to hear about your cold. These viruses get everywhere. And Jules and I are both fine thanx and up to our usual silly games, which I won't go into. ;)

Yes, the Winter Olympics are on tv here too. And did you know that only 10 miles from where I live is the Commonwealth Games Stadium in the city of Manchester? That begins this summer.

My baby, which is now most certainly a girl, is due in about six weeks, so I am looking forward to the big day when it all starts to happen  I'm sure we will be fine and everything will go according to plan (my first).

T.H. I agree with the paradise part......It has been my ambition to visit North Island NZ, the part that I would say certainly is paradise....Its my ambition to atleast visit not only Australasia, but Oceania too.......mmmmmmm one day...one day:)

Merry Christmas!

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Without wanting to offend any of our dear NZ friends, i was over there (NZ) last year on a snowboarding holiday (and it kicked arse i might add!) and i thought the South Island was much prettier and more spectacular in scenery than its northen counterpart. If your going to visit - at least have a look at South Island as well - it is beautiful!!!
