Show us your pets..

They weren't all hunters, but every one was from serious hunt stock. One in particular was so much the hunter that he didn't need training. He acted like a hunting beagle by pure instinct. His owners also had no idea what to do with him, so he was crazy from boredom as much as anything else.

Well, I was gonna go on a rant, but seri did a pretty good job for me.

Any working dog is going to be crazy without stimulation so I have zero patience for people that get dogs and then don't know what to do with them due to lack of breed research. For instance, tons of people around here get labs, and I tell you, without proper training and stimulation, labs are HORRIBLE because their energy levels are so high. I actually refused to board labs when I owned a boarding kennel because so many people simply got them and stuck them in the back yard with no guidance which makes for some really awful dogs to be around. Not to mention people bring them in on those damn flexi-leashes which is beyound stupid as the dogs just bounce off the walls with no control...argh! Flexi-leashes should be banned from existence.

I really hate when people RID of them because of those instincts too. People are always giving away herding dogs around here because they nip at the heels of children...well, duh, they HERD THINGS! All of my rescued great danes were given away by their owners because they got "too big". Well what the fuckola do ya expect, LOL.

Just to add: What of my huge pet peeves is people who get large dogs, then squeeze them into a tiny apartment or house. My mom has a golden lab, who she keeps on a leash 90 percent of the time. Then my mom bitches cause Noel gets in the trash and is hyper. FOR GOD SAKES SHE NEEDS TO BE WALKED OFTEN! It's why, when we get a dog, I'm determined to get a medium sized animal (about beagle sized), so that they fit in my apartment. I will not be getting anything that's bred to do something like hunt or herd or whatever. I want a pet, not a working animal.

On a side note: Seri - do you have an aide animal? My grandma's best friend had this awesome dog who helped her out tremendously. She'd let her know if the phone rang or someone knocked. It was much more helpful than the lights my grandma had over her door, cause you have to be looking at them to know they're lit up.

In defense of the folks that owned the beagle in question, they didn't get him. He showed up at their door as an extremely determined puppy. They figured out later what hunter had bred him from his markings and age. Said hunter wouldn't take the pup (then a year old) back because he would be untrainable or something *shrug*

I didn't really agree with how they handled the dog, but it wasn't like they decided to own a hunting dog. The little nutcase just showed up and refused to leave.

I am with you on working dogs though. Humans have spent millenia modifying dogs for various purposes. Domestic dogs and working dogs are entirely different critters, and working dogs are more tool than furry companion. And just like you can't turn screws with a hammer, trying to get a border collie to be an apartment-dwelling city pet is an exercise doomed to failure.

And flexi-leashes are best used on unruly children =P

Beagles, as a breed, do like to have a job.

Both of my other dogs have beagle in them. While Ellie will never be a hunter due to her blindness, the Jack Russell in her does make her braver than hell, Maggie and Alice are fun to watch when they hunt. Alice, true to her heritage, hunts by scent and Maggie is a visual hunter. I like watching them hunt and cue off of each other.

Pound puppy would work good - a dog of dubious origin (as my grandfather called them) would also probably too.

I came across my beagle as a stray and now don't want any other breed (except a bassett hound). I love the I don't give a shit attitude.. they have their agenda and if it happens to coindice with yours, so be it.

Btw.. if you are considering a beagle, gracie, know this: beagle is the Latin word for "escape artist" :D

That made me laugh. Why? Cause I have a flexi-leash for my son. When we're at the zoo or any other place that has lots of strangers and lotsa places for him to hide from a pissed off mommy, we put him in a harness, and attach the flexi-leash. It didn't come with a flexi-leash, it came with a canvas two foot leash, which did NOT do the job. We've had other exhausted parents, who've been chasing exhausting children, come up and ask us where we bought the harness and leash. And other parents (normally ones with really calm kids) glare at us. I don't really care, I can't stand the stress of constantly trying to figure out where D is and if he was kidnapped this time.

Sounds more and more like my son, who I caught climbing out his window during a time out last week.

Of course I kinda thought he might try and scared the SHIT out of him by swatting his butt when he was half way out the window. He asked how I knew and I said 'I know everything.'

As annoying as the constant jailbreak attempts are, I wouldn't trade Al the Pal for the world. Hearing a beagle bray has become a sound that I love to hear. She's a pretty vocal animal and grunts, sighs and makes a short snort sound when it is dark and you get close - I guess her way of ensuring she doesn't get stepped on.

There is a brace (pair) of beagles that roam the area hunting and it warms my heart to hear them on the hunt.

Here are mine in the order they came to be with me.

The picture of him is from his prime. He is about to turn 15 and is much smaller now. He's the most laid back dog I've ever known but has become more demanding in his advanced age. He rules quietly...unless he wants a treat, then he becomes demando dog.

Her Royal Highness is the princess of the house. (Yes, she surpasses me on the princess scale.) Headstrong, aloof, and independent. (I have no idea where she gets it...) She has taken on the role of the great protector but she bows to his lead.

Kinda furry for being so far south, don't you think?

(I bet I could get past your security) ;)

Their coats actually protect against heat as well as cold although not to as great an extent. They are both spoiled anyway...the A/C is set for their comfort not mine. They still will go sleep in the sun on 90+ days.

Don't be so sure about that. Treats will only give you about 2 seconds lead time. When she eats you can hear the vacuum.

Jack Russell and Beagle mix? That sounds like 8ft of dog in a 2ft body.

The dog I have been referring bears that out. Vader is the escapin-est dog in all of creation. They swear that he snitched the door keys, went to the store, and got copies made.

I don't need em for my kids, but just barely. I can understand the folks that use them.

Quite the opposite. She gets her size from the beagle in her (15in beagle) and her coloration, head shape, ears and personality from the Jack Russell side. I think the sharp teeth that have been scarring up my hands, wrists, legs, ankles and toes (yes, that hurts when she does that) are incumbent to all breeds of her young age.

I'm ALL for leashes on kids, it's simple safety. Flexi leashes are a great idea for that, I love it lol. However, one of the most basic methods of controlling your dog is feeding your energy to them through a properly fitted leash and collar, and you might as well not have anything on them at all for all the control a flexi-leash offers, not to mention they are dangerous as the dogs can take off and snap their necks back. I've had 5 clients with dogs that will killed this way.

Some large dogs do fine in apartments...depends on the breed. I have a great dane and live in an apartment, but danes are very low energy dogs. She goes everywhere with me though, so she isn't actually in the apartment all that much and we walk daily. She could care less about the walk...she's more interested in the couch. Typical dane. Danes actually make fantastic apartment dogs with moderate exercise. Labs? heck no. So it depends on the breed as well as the size IMO.

Gracie, Wyatt Earp the corgi is my assistance dog. He alerts me to doorbells, fire alarms, sirens and alarm clocks. He goes *everywhere* with me and wears an orange vest so people know I'm deaf as my lipreading skills are so good as is my speech, so people don't know I'm deaf until I've ignored them and they think I'm just a complete bitch, heh. Assistance dogs are rare in my area, especially hearing, so I get more hassle than help sometimes but I figure if I don't demand people learn and respect him and his right (and mine) it's no ones fault but my own. I would be lost without him.

One of mine is a Northern breed (Alaskan Malamute), and my first thought was that it wouldn't be fair to her to have her as a pet in 100* weather, but my second thought was that she'd been bred in the South, and whether I adopted her or someone else did, she was still doomed to a life in hot weather. It was then that I rationalized I could at least provide her with a happy home and keep her in a climate controlled environment, rather than someone else adopting her and leaving her chained in the yard in the middle of July/August.

Both of our girls live inside with us and get lots of playtime and gambits in the backyard each day, both with each other and our kids. If the young Malamute didn't have stimulation, I don't want to imagine the destruction she would do to our house.

In our lives, our animals are given the same attention and love that we give our children. I have 2 human boys and 2 canine girls .... and all are my kids. :)

I could probably get by without the leash, but I'd be exhausted and PISSED by the end of the day. I don't take the kids to the zoo to ruin my day, it's supposed to be fun. With the leash, I can enjoy myself, too, and not be ready to MURDER a child when we go home. Or a husband who's embarrassed me in public by losing it.

Yeah, but you walked her a bit, you didn't just leave her inside all the time. The people I know who do this leave the dogs chained up in their yard all the time, and it just ticks me off.

I hear that - I know that my grandma's friend had a lot of trouble with people refusing to let her bring her dog inside. She was CONSTANTLY showing her ID thingie that stated he's an assistance animal. She, also, read lips REALLY well. So did my grandma. You had to know them to know they were deaf. My grandma is not a dog person, so she never bothered getting a dog to help her, though.

That pisses me off to no end too. I HATE when people chain dogs outside. Heck, I have issues with dogs living outside period except in certain cases. A lot of people get great danes as "guard dogs" and they do NOT have the temperament or coat to be able to handle being outside, it's torture.

It's actually illegal to ask someone to show ID for a service dog, as you don't even have to have one. Service animals are not required to be certified. Wyatt has his canine good citizens but other than that he isn't "certified". Businesses can't refuse entry, ask for proof of disability or anything like that. The most they can do is ask "is that a service dog". They can't even ask what the dog is for. I'm constantly educating businesses on this which I don't mind, but it really makes me mad when I ask to speak to a manager, explain the situation and ask that it not happen again, and it does. It should be his responsibility to inform his/her employees and educate them IMO.

It really bothers me mostly when people get all pissy about the dog and then when I say he is an assistance animal, they get all apologetic and back off. Um, you would think the bright orange vest with HEARING DOG all over it, the matching bright orange leash with ASSISTANCE DOG and the bright orange collar would tip them off, you know? Hell, even the DOG is orange... (orange is the official hearing assistance colour, which I don't expect people to know, but it IS a tad visible...)

/end rant LOL

We have three kitties, Princess Tabitha, Rocco, and Sage.

The pictures are in order of name. ^_^ Enjoy the cuteness!!

I know this is a thread about pets, but I got distracted by the hand in the third pic. (hand fetish..lol) You should post that one in the Dominant hands thread.:D
