The Ohio State Highway Patrol has been telling the fine citizens of the State of Ohio, that there will be checkpoints this weekend. Now, at least they tell us where they will be set up so they can be avoided. I have been stopped at these "checkpoints" before, they check to see if your drunk, have your seatbelt on and if your papers are in order. ie: registration, insurance cards etc. The Patrol is also running ads saying that if you are pulled over for a seatbelt violation there will be no more warnings, you will automatically get an 85.00 ticket! The never ending erosion of basic rights. Does your state do this type of random checkpoints?

Being in Ohio, I guess I am having to give that one a big affirmative.. Oh well I always have my papers and wear the seatbelt.. let them pull me over... I'll toss doughnuts at thier heads.

So you feel you've lost the right to operate an unlicensed, uninsured vehicle while legally intoxicated? That's so not true - you just have to pay the price.

Driving

Is not a "right".

You aren't guaranteed a driver's license with citizenship.

If you don't want to play by the rules don't drive. Walk. Go around the checkpoints or better yet..don't drink and drive. The highways are public property and are used by everyone, as such your "rights" end where the possibility of you causing harm to others begins. They aren't telling you where you can and cannot drive to, just that you can't do it drunk.

Don't like the seat belt law work to get it changed. I rarely wear mine when I am in the truck...if I get caught, I pay. Same with speeding or any other infraction.

You can still plead not guilty in a court of law...that falls under the right of due process.

addendum...I am a truckdriver fully ensconced in the state of Ohio...and I fully support the Ohio State Patrol.

Reason 1001 that you're an idiot.

I wear my seatbelt and pay my insurance I also dont drink and drive. I dont believe the state has the "right" to stop law abiding individuals.

Checkpoints are legal

:p

Sure it does

The highway belongs to the state.

If you are law abiding then they will let you proceed on your merry way. They are doing it for a definite reason. Highway deaths increase dramatically during this holiday. Most notably due to drinking. If robberies were up at a certain time period I would expect increased police vigilance and scrutiny during said periods. It is simply a calculated response to a proven problem.

How about you just run through the checkpoint without stopping. That would get your point across.

Georgia has been doing this for some time but here they also check car seats as well. I think its a wonderful thing, anything to get the drunks off the road.

I'm pretty glad the ChiP's are randomly checking on the major holidays. It's not that much of an inconvenience and it gets a lot of drunks off the roads.

Yoda's a putz, he let them talk him out of trusting his intuition, next thing you know we got Darth Fuckin Vader to deal with. Not good.

I'd recommend wearing your seatbelt...I went to the state run seatbelt class. Not so pretty things happen to people when they don't wear their seatbelts.

No.

Truckers call the Ohio Highway Patrol the Gestapo for a reason.

Some may do that. Usually it's the trucker that is running about 80 and sitting two feet off the van full of kids in front of him.

Then he bitches about getting a ticket.

There is the joke about how the OSP determines manpower needs.

They put one trooper at every mile marker of every interstate and lay off the leftovers.

Muah back to the sexiest grand daddy I know

:p

As far as I know, they're not doing checkpoints here. Though it is a 'zero tolerance' weekend, which means no leeway on speeding and signal usage. Once you're pulled over, they'll check seatbelts and all that.

I couldn't care less, really. One less asshole on the interstate can't be a bad thing.

I did see a cop the other day on the entrance ramp to the interstate, with his radar gun out. About 20 feet in front of him, sitting on the shoulder was a guy hitchhiking to Omaha. Isn't hitchhiking illegal on the interstate?

And the law says you stop for a law enforcement agent when he so indicates. It's OK to regret the inconvenience, but it's part of the system you say you abide by...

So what's your point? If you're law abiding and wearing your seat belt, what're you bitching about?

In the UK the police are not supposed to stop you unless you have comitted and actual offence ie speeding, dangerous driving etc Random road blocks and random police checks are not supposed to be allowed.

I know what everyone is saying here ie if you are a law abiding citizen then what have you got to be worried about.

I tend to side with bored1 on this. I dont like the idea of the police having road blocks - or random checks, we are not a police state yet - ok maybe a little bit of an exageration. But I dont believe that law abiding citizens should be stopped going about their everyday life for any reason . Commit a crime - fine throw the book - but random checks today, then it will be ID cards next and then DNA tests and then gene mutation tests and before you know it there will be a coup the police will be everywher. It will be like living in Stalinist Russia

* calms down and takes another sedative*

now as I was saying........

Common sense and High School Physics tells you that a wearing a seatbelt is wise. Having the state pass laws telling me I have no "choice" in the matter bothers me for some reason. My body my choice.

Strange, but why does it take a holiday weekend to bring out the roadblocks and random stopping?
Here in NZ, our police can stop you at anytime they feel its warranted. Not just on a holiday weekend, but anytime, and anywhere. The can make you submit to a breath screening test (for alcohol) they can check your license, your registration, your warrant of fitness (roadworthy certificate) and anything else you can think of.
Wearing a seatbelt here is compulsory for anyone over the age of 5, under 5 they must be restrained in an approved child restraint. Its just how its always been. Do we bitch about it? No, its a fact of life and it makes our roads safer and saves lives.
Same with helmets on motorcycles, its compulsory to wear one. Take a look at a smashed skull sometime and tell me that wearing a helmet is an afront to my personal freedom. I've been riding/racing bikes for 30 years (both dirt and sealed circuit and street) and anyone who doesn't wear a helmet is a FUCKING IDIOT and doesn't deserve personal freedom.

The laws are there for one reason, to make the roads safer.
