ShotSpotter Led to Hundreds of Arrests in Chicago This Year. Mayor Johnson Is Still Getting Rid of It

Too many black men and boys getting caught too soon after discharging their stolen weapons.
I bet they all bought their guns legally in a red state. Gun shop owners love money more than they hate black people, I guess.

It's great technology and completely unracist, based on audio alone. No cams, no images, just an alert based on identifying gunshots and providing a location. In just the first eight months of this year, ShotSpotter alerted the police to 29,829 gunshot events. Nearly three-quarters of those events produced no 911 calls, so the police would have had no opportunity to investigate them without this technology. 451 arrests were recorded based on ShotSpotter alerts. Many of those similarly had no corresponding emergency service calls. The technology also led to the recovery of 470 guns and 29,214 bullet shells. THIS is proactive policing that has an immediate impact on gun crime and reduces illegal guns / helps with the arrest of REAL criminals using guns for crimes.

Johnson is trying to remove the contract singlehandedly, but without the cooperation of the City Council, the majority of whom want the contract extended there may not be much he can do about it. Never mind, his DA will likely just let the criminals off anyhow. Of course, very sensibly, the sensors are deployed in the areas with the highest volume of firearms discharges. Unfortunately, that means they are positioned in primarily Black and Hispanic residents. Because that's where the shootings are. Quelle surprise.
