Why would we not judge every aspect of a story? Subject matter is not sacrosanct. It's the meat of the story, and if a reader has no opinion on the subject, the story has no point.

Although I won't bother to comment on the above snippet, if a reader thinks a story is unpleasant or misogynistic or a turnoff, or conversely, that it is fun and hot and emotionally moving, IMO that's the most important aspect of his or her opinion. I've read a few stories riddled with technical errors that I otherwise enjoyed because of the subject matter and the way it was treated. And I've read some well-polished ones that made me want to scrub out my mind with bleach and coarse sand. Which stories would I save to my hard drive? To which authors would I send feedback and offers of editing help?

My point was that a story isn't automatically bad if you don't agree with the subject matter, hence my rhetorical question. You can legitimately point out errors, improbabilities and inconsistencies in the story but you ought not to condemn it because you don't happen to like stories about the particular topic be it incest or BDSM or whatever. You appear to be saying the same thing.

I got the impression it was being condemned as much for the subject as for the poor quality of the writing. Usually the criticism of Dr M is constructive, but not on this occasion.
