Sharpe OOC Casting Call

I'm sorry if I was a bit unclear about the definition of untrained. I was merely refering to the rather complicated manouvre of forming square, something that supposedly demanded expert timing as well as iron discipline even for highly trained infantry.

I'm not doubting the skills of our Spanish Hussars, but being a gambler *or rather Justine is* she'll take her chances deeming the Spaniards a bit dozy in the midday heat.

And as far as the duel goes, I can sacrifice Justine's mount in order to carry out the duel on foot. Or if one wants to copy a scene straight from the Sharpe films, there is one in "Sharpe's Battle" where the Lord Kiely of the Real Compagnia Irlandesa challenges two French dragoons to single combat.

Ah, I can't see Alfonso challenging anyone to single combat. He is more of a tactician than a warrior. On the other hand, if Justine is specially interested in killing him herself...

I'd say that Justine wants to put him in his place, for being Spanish and daring to defy the Emperor in such blatant a manner.

Would it be plausible that Alfonso's men would go some lenghts to protect him? E.g making sure to put themselves in the way of the French and him?

OK...I'm in a mind to perhaps stall the attack, only going for the piquets as Steiner adviced, Striking hard and quick, pouring as much lead into the Spanish from a comparatively safe distance. Such a scenario could include a pursuit where Justine has her horse shot under her and being pitted against Alfonso on more equal terms.

What's your take on it?

That would certainly allow for a lenghtier duel, and casualties would be reduced in both sides.

If you fired from a distance and while on the move most of the time, I guess I would lose up to fifteen men, and you would lose up to ten. But the ensuing pursuit would be quite a different matter... I wouldn't see any more casualties until close quarters combat.

Then it's settled: Justine will launch an attack on the piquets, aiming to pour fire at the hussars from a distance before taking off.

Casualty rate
Spanish 10
French 6

In the initial firefight, as for the pursuit, I'd deem that the dragoons would lose 6 more...

Hmmm... do you intend to escape into the forest, or across the plains?

Trying to go through the forests won't exactly offer that much cover, but it is difficult terrain to traverse when looking back at the enemy, while risking getting a branch lodged into your mouth.

Justine will take her chances over the plains, the plan as it has developed will hinge on surprise, then a rapid withdrawal thus putting as much ground between the Spanish and her own detachment.

A rough estimate of the time would give Justine 10 minutes at the most and that includes traversing the plowed field, scaling the slope, engaging the piquets as well as any other hussar before taking off.

I'll do a spot of editing to my last post in the IC thread then to bring it in line with the discussion here.

A full squad, so that would be ten.

I think we still are within the calculated spectre of casualties.

Ten hussars going to catch Justine on foot. Major Benoit will probably try and send at least three dragoons to aid their colonel.

Let us therefor assume that the time that is left for duelling will be within the range of 5-10 minutes before help can be summoned.

Does that work for you?

Five minutes is stretching it a bit, have in mind that while in real life, posting the fight is a long time, in game time, the fight doesn't last that long. I think five minutes is quite enough.

If it isn't... we can summon my special magical powers with which I can invent a world and distort the laws of time and space in it. ^^

And I thought Godmodding was prohibited...

I'll go with five minutes...and hope that Major Benoit will have the sense of trying to lend some aid to his Colonel.

Both sets of troops are superbly trained cavalry. But the Spanish Hussars are trying to fight as infantry. Get them on horses and I imagine they'll hold their own with anybody.

Theory aside though, the important thing is that it's fun to write and it achieves the plot points desired. :)

Well, I shall be leaving for the night.

Back to killing gabachos tomorrow morning. Until then, perhaps Sharpe could get something done. And Miss Savage could get something done. And perhaps both of them can get someone...

... naaaah, easy joke. ^L^

I'm Richard Sharpe. I call more Crapaud's before breakfast than most officers do all day.

Well, more Crapaud's AFTER breakfast, anyway. ;)

And do you think Sharpe is man enough to handle our darling enchantreuse Justine then? :p

Apart from Harper the men under his command aren't much to brag about

Hagman is an old man
Harris is a poet
Perkins is dead but had he lived he was a wee lad
Isaiah Tongue a drunkard
Cooper a thief

Nah...Justine would beat them with one hand tied to her back...

Hehehe, Old Dan Hagman would have had Justine dead before she'd got to the top of the hill. ;)

But what if she was Over the hills and far away...?

:p

Apologies for not joining in again sooner....a quiet evening with friends turned into a 'night' with friends ;) where much rum was consumed...
