Super man was the man of steel something about the earth made him invunerable.

When a gun man would shoot at him he would have his hands on his hips and his chest thrust outward and upward as the bullets bounced off of him.

My question is why did he always duck when the guy throws his gun after he was out of bullets, surely the force of the gun would be no more than the bullets could have been?

he was afraid the gun would mess up his hair.... if it wasn't slicked perfectly Lois might recognize him as Clark

maybe he was trying to avoid head injury... or trying to keep his hair from getting messed up... or maybe trying to avoid losing a colored contact?

Sorry for the question I jsut went on a superman bender and watched like 5 or 6 superamdn movies and in every one, he stands up strong and tought to just about everything, but always ducks the thrown gun.

You're talking about the Hollywood version...

...In the original comic and authentic version (that's not corrupted by that massive propaganda machine called the film industry) Superman never ducked. It would be a waste of ink. The gun would bounce off his chest or he would melt it with x-ray vision or simply just catch it.

And in the very original versions of the story it wasn't something in the atmosphere that made him invincible. He was never meant to be invincible. When he first came to Earth all could do was leap over buildings, run very fast and was extremely stong. All this was caused because Earth was much smaller and less dense than Krypton.

I wonder what it would be like when I could fly around downtown

and get high on some funky yellow sun :(o)

and boy my friends would all be stunned
