Seattle Public Schools: We just fired unvaccinated staff to protect everyone and stop the spread of COVID! We now have a fully vaccinated staff! Hurray!

Also Seattle Public Schools: We're going remote and cutting bus routes because our fully vaccinated staff is out with COVID.

Locally at least one-third of all teachers are isolating because of Covid, despite being fully vaccinated. The spread of Omicron among children of school age is alarming even if they generally suffer little more than similar to a cold - but they infect adults around them.

Most of the isolating teachers have no symptoms or very mild ones but government rules say if you've got it - isolate. Currently for 7 days. Will be 5 from next week. Our scientists say that if you have Covid even with no symptoms if you isolate for seven days the chances of you infecting another at the end of the isolation period is 12%. After 5 days - 30%.

In the US it's 5 days now. Why does the UK refuse to follow the science

It doesn't. It has taken a calculated risk that isolating for 5 days is less damaging particularly for nurses, doctors and teachers and other front line staff.

With a 7 day isolation period we were losing far too many people from essential services.

So you have to tailor your science to accommodate the essential persons?

We have to make balanced judgements on the impact on the economy and essential services and the science. The science would say that even a 7 day isolation period is too short with a 12% risk of infecting someone else.

If omicron was more deadly, the science might prevail.

So then, you agree that the restrictions need to be flexible. Aren't we just dickering over what restrictions to impose then?

A full forced air mask is better then no mask, but somewhere in between is a reasonable compromise. Right?
