Hrefnadakis has a story up on the Story Discussion Circle at the moment. Only six people (including me) have commented on it, which isn't really good enough considering the number of people here. No excuses about: "I didn't think I could add anything new." The more opinions there are the better.

From what I see here, we all fancy ourselves as something of the literary critics and professional appreciators, so why not come and do it on the SDC which is a wonderful, wonderful place. Not only will oyu help other people, you do learn a hell of lot yourself.

i must say i've looked at the story disscussion forum and it just looks confusing..how exactly does it work and how is it different form the story feedback forum?

Ok i may just be being stupid, but...i thought i'd best ask anyway!

Glad you asked:

For a start it's organised (by the great and powerful KillerMuffin, God bless her little cotton socks). Every so often (whenever KM remembers in other words) a story is put up for discussion. Those on the board rip it apart and make suggestions on how it can be improved. To get one of your story's critiqued, you submit its link in the Submissions thread and wait for us to get round to it. To be critiqued, you have to critique (ie, you won't get placed up for discussion if you don't participate in other peoples.

The major advantage over the Feedback forum is that everything's in the open. Not only does this give the author a chance to reply, but it also means that other people can see the reviews and work from them. It ends up as a discussion rather than just a selection of unconnected reviews.

You do learn a hell of a lot. If anyone doubts it, then they should read the first edition of one of my stories and then the second which was written after the former was taken apart from the SDC. The difference is unimaginable. Although I haven't got anything up for discussion, I still participate, cause you learn a hell of a lot from looking at other people's stories critically and it improves your own work.

If you want to improve your writing: go have a look there. I guarantee you'll learn somehting if you make an effort, even if it's only how to use commas correctly from me THE COMMA GOD. :D

Thank you, Earl.

I think the one advantage to the SDC is that in order to get feedback you must first give feedback.

If I had my way about it, I would remove the story feedback forum, change the SDC to the story discussion and feedback forum and require that all persons begging for feedback first give feedback to someone else at least once. Feedback that's more than "Great story! Keep it up!" sorts of things. At least mention why it was so great.

Of course, this will probably never actually happen. *sigh* The baby birds demand to be fed but they never give anything back.

KM,

What ever happened to the discussion of The Gathering Night? Did we get at what you were looking for or all fall back into something else?

I really like that idea, KM. What do you think Laurel would say?

(Baby birds do return those poopie sacs back to mother nature for recycling.)
