Scouries scores the nude day contest entries

I did it! 80 stories, 65+? different authors. I wasn’t sure when I started if I would actually be able to read every story in the contest. Thanks to the somewhat limited number of entries (at least compared to the Xmas contest), and the fact that such a high percentage of the works were under three full pages long, it was doable...
This was an ambitious undertaking and (though I know it is not the consensus and will seem biased) not unappreciated. I cannot guess what my feelings would have been, had my 'scouries score' been a low one. I do try very hard to keep an open mind, accept, and try to learn from feedback of all kinds / from anyone willing to offer it. For me... the more, the better!

No issue sharing this... "Naked, I" currently has 13,953 views, but only 37 votes and 12 public comments. Sadly, this is "pre-sweep". I have no idea how many votes will 'stick'.

More stories!

Damn - 2 more today - will review later.

Quick response to Sk on 'authors like Rumple and the kitten sisters work hard to get readers outside the small intellectual centre of Lit and they get them.'

Quite simply this was a compliment!

Certain authors work to get readers and I admire that.

The rumpled man has done it by writing good stories over a long period of time that willingly deliver good sex - a requirement if you want to be read widely here. He doesn't apologise for the sex, in fact seems quite content here.

Danielle arrived here and quickly made people aware of her. She sent out comments to every author of a new story for over a month. I normally wouldn't have read her stories (romance, nonhuman, novels, sci-fi aren't really my thing) but after recieving a nice comment from her (she probably didnt even read my story, but so what) I read some of hers and actually liked them. She found a reader, one of many.

You're not afraid to write sex and you're not afraid to write in catagories others in AH perhaps look down on . You invite readers. And why not? It's clearly more satisfying to have your story read (or at least viewed) by 20,000 people than it is by 3,000. I know, I've had both.

Others, like Many Feathers or Ronnie W likewise seem to work to get readers.

Another author, I'll leave his/her name unmentioned, has a technique whereby he/she somehow has a red H by his/her story two minutes (or so I assume) after his/her new stories are released. I've never actually figured out what time stories come out, but invariably if I open the 'new story' list fairly early in the am and only one or two stories have red H's, one wil be his/hers. I admire him/her. Red H's bring more readers so it's probably a successful strategy.

The point I had been trying to make in my comment was that readers and votes are out there - its up to us to find them - not blame them. Upping the minimum vote requirement would simply force all of us to market ourselves and stories better to readers.

As to total votes and views - I was actually curious to see these figures as of close of official counting (and I believe it would be interesting for every author to see these figures, give everyone a good idea of the size and interests of our readers)- I'm not sure when that is. (However seeing them now doesn't seem a big deal - I don't think seeing someone elses total views or votes should influence the contest but who knows? There may be some troll-like sweep intricacy I don't understand). Maybe you, a much more popular figure among the contest set, would be a better person to collect this data.

Hey, I still send out tons of comments when I have time, plus I do Monday's reviews...which means at least six comments if not more. But I do appreciate the compliment. And yes, Scouries, I've actually read your stories. Thanks for the honest feedback on my work, and the comments you've left on other of my stories. I actually admire you for doing this critique of every story that was submitted for the contest, it can't be easy reading all of them. Some are good, some are exceptional and some...well, stink.

STORY 81 – ‘Billy’s First Taste of Cream’ by froghills

STORY 81 – ‘Billy’s First Taste of Cream’ by froghills

Lots of sex. Lots and lots of sex.

2 I preferred ‘Skinny Dipping With the Newmans’. This one was simply too far out for me. I want to be aroused, not bludgeoned.

STORY 82 – ‘Guard Don of Eden’ by Dingus Guy

STORY 82 – ‘Guard Don of Eden’ by Dingus Guy

Actually the start, the idea, was very promising. But once Don and Autumn started to talk I found it went downhill. The dialogue was unnatural, stilted to a point that it completely distracted me from the story. Surely no one talks like these two.

3 The second half I found boring. I knew the sex was coming sometime but had to wade through long paragraph after long paragraph of the tantra class. It might have been interesting if it had been shortened and tightened up.

finally finished

well I can tell you that I haven't solicited readers, other than entering contests to broaden readership... I don't give a lot of feedback, other than my weekly reviews... because I don't comment on things I don't like or that don't appeal to me. I generally don't ask for votes in my stories, even in contest entries.

I think you assume that all authors want the same thing--the popular vote.

But this isn't an election or popularity contest for some of us.

If I wanted the "popular vote" I'd write like Sarahhh... formulaic incest stories that garner huge vote totals and guarantee that "red H." She actually has talent... if only she'd use her powers for good :) But perhaps that's what she wants to write... just like you, Scouries... I assume you like what you write and write what interests you? Or are you writing primarily incest stories because they garner the most views/votes on the site?

Loving Wives is another category that will afford you a large readership... (not as high of scores as incest, though)

But some of us aren't writing to be popular. That isn't the most important thing or even the primary thing to some of us. I know your argument has always been that contests should reflect the "most popular" stories, and in your opinion, that's the story with the highest total AND the most votes. Which of course gives something written in a category like "incest" quite an edge doesn't it?

Yet there have been amazing stories that have won in those less popular categories that are just awesome pieces of fiction. Letters from Pojala by Lauren Hynde comes to mind in Letters and Transcripts, which won first in the Holiday 2003 contest, or Valentine's in the Dregs by Lucifer_Carroll which won 2nd place Valentine 2005, and was a 4-lit-page (*gasp*) Romance...

I think you overestimate the value of the"popular" vote, frankly.

Thanks for the reviews!

After ten years of writing promotional travel drivel, It's been a blast writing these stories for Literotica. Having been a loyal fan of this site for many years I look forward to taking the time to write some pieces that make sense and have the proper masturbatory content.
Thanks again all; I enjoyed every story in the contest and found it interesting to read them from an author's point of view.

not a vote slut Miss K?

C’mon SK – you are so full of shit! You are accepted, and I say this in admiration, as one of Literotica’s greatest ‘vote sluts’.

-You’ve even got 4 entries in a contest you’re not eligible for! In every contest I’ve ever entered, whether sports or academic or business, entries aren’t allowed from ineligible contestants.
-You’ve posted over 4000 times
-You’ve started a review thread
-You’re pumping out stories faster than people can read them
- You pop up everywhere I look
- You seem to change your little picture every day

What we all want are readers – you can shovel the bullshit but that’s why we put our stories up on Literotica – we want them read.

And what do you have against poor Sarahhh? I can quite accept your hostility towards me but zap – out of the blue, this cheap shot against an author who can write both you and I combined under the table while blindfolded. I don’t always like her stories but your rant was way over the top. Just because she’s able to get over a 100 comments on story after story is no reason to attack her.
There’s clearly some story between you two I’ve missed, but it sure sounds like sour grapes and jealousy!

I haven’t found your ‘New Story Review Thread’ yet so don’t know what kind of reviews you give there but quickly perusing the comments on some Nude Day Contest stories this a.m. I quickly found the following ones posted by you. I simply looked at stories posted by familiar AH names and these 18 popped up – every one was given a 5!
After reading this tripe I feel much better about my scoring/rating thread.

Wouldn't be the same...
06/29/06 by SelenaKittyn
A contest wouldn't be the same without these for me, now... I loved "Tiny Hairs" and "Examination"... and thank you for making the case for we redheads. :) A triumph of 50-word stories once again

Mentioned
06/16/06 by SelenaKittyn
You've been mentioned in the New Story Reviews in the Author's Hangout.

This really got my juices flowing! This couple is a European version of Mary Matalin and James Carville... only way sexier and more interesting! Boy, opposites sure do attract and create a great deal of heat in the process. This gets a big *yumilicious* from Selena! It's a smart, witty, extremely well-written and did I mention HOT!? piece of work

Unveiling...
07/03/06 by SelenaKittyn
Thanks for the reminder that undressing can be a true unveiling... nice work, Sack, good luck in the contest

Beautiful
06/28/06 by SelenaKittyn
This is beautifully written, sweet and yes, hot! :) You did a great job in the differentiation between joy and pleasure. As a nursing mother (4 babies-not all at once... lol) I can say that there is a difference, and that your sexuality doesn't end just because you have babies... in fact, it's greatly enhanced. Wonderful submission, Kev. Loved it.

Interesting
06/20/06 by SelenaKittyn
Interesting take on nudity, very broad in scope for such a short piece, too! Great job, Sal. Good luck :)
Bliss
06/27/06 by SelenaKittyn
Welcome back, Muse! My heart leapt when I saw your name on this entry and was not disappointed. You are a poet, a true weaver of words. Every single moment of this piece, every nuance, it is all meant to be savored. I was drawn in, captivated, and charmed. Sublime. As always. Go, off with you, what are you waiting for!? Publish something spectacular!

*Still Giggling*
06/26/06 by SelenaKittyn
Awesome satire, hats of to you!
Riot!
07/02/06 by SelenaKittyn
This was a riot! Quite a wild ride... whew! "I want to shoot your gun" *grin* uh-huh... Great job, loved it, good luck in the contest. :)

Well done!
07/02/06 by SelenaKittyn
This was a fine telling of a Selkie tale... and the ending was perfect... as Selkies I believe always disappear and they can only contact a human once every seven years? Lovely story, good luck in the contest

Beautiful, Sensual...
06/22/06 by SelenaKittyn
Carried me away, left me breathless and floating. Truly lovely.

Totally Fun!
06/15/06 by SelenaKittyn
Your snappy dialogue and witty banter between characters makes this such fun! I had a blast following them around... great story, Kate. Good luck in the contest

Fun!
06/28/06 by SelenaKittyn
This was totally fun, quite hot ("Not that sheath!" *chuckle*) and I loved the ended. What man would go back, indeed! Talk about the Fates... they had it in for him. Or he in them? :) Really enjoyed this, CapriciousLass, looking forward to more from you! Good luck in the contest

Exciting!
07/04/06 by SelenaKittyn
This is well written and exciting and had a fun ending. This line made me chuckle: "In the wild days of my youth, I did a lot of stupid things and was lucky to have gotten through it without a disease, a stalker, or a kid." and wonder how much of this might be true? :) Good luck in the contest

Sexy
06/18/06 by SelenaKittyn
This is sexy and I love the theme--beauty is more than just skin deep. Great job, good luck!

Swept Away!
07/05/06 by SelenaKittyn
This could easily have gone into Romance... I was totally swept away by this, the turn of events, the incredible chemistry between these two--and frankly, I'm a sucker for a knight in shining armor :) This was a lovely read, Og, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it...

Sweet Little Slut
07/02/06 by SelenaKittyn
Isn't there a little "Carrie" in us all? *grin* Damn Red... I need a shower now... :) Great job, good luck in the contest

Sweet
07/03/06 by SelenaKittyn
It's a sweet ending...

I just wanted to comment on the money she'd saved... you're forgetting that an object in motion tends to stay in motion, an object at rest tends to stay at rest. Change is hard and we often need a catalyst. It's hard to find the motivation to leave that kind of life once you get a taste of the money that starts rolling in. I think what we have here is the story of a woman who found a reason to leave it behind... nice job, DG, good luck to you :)

Romance and Drama...
07/05/06 by SelenaKittyn
Lots of romance and drama in this one--of course :) An enjoyable read. "Lickable abs"... *chuckle* Great descriptor. Good luck in the contest!

What nonsense. What a fool you are, scouries.

Selena can certainly speak for herself but I had to add my own opinion - you've certainly spent pages and pages doing the same.

But not on the stories, of course. Your attacks are personal, not story-related, and your story comments are critical but are in no way constructive or helpful.

That you could actually post about how a story was too long for you to bother to read yet you still felt qualified to vote and give comments? Many readers would do that, of course, but certainly not someone planning to give serious vote consideration to all of the stories in a particular contest.

The New Story Review thread is located at the top of the Author's Hangout. Easy to find, but once again, you didn't even bother to look so you're again passing judgment on something you haven't even seen.

I hope no young writers entering their first story contest were unduly hurt by this personal ego boost you happen to call a review thread.

Scouries, if you want to rate the stories, rate the stories. As I've said before, this thread has been interesting in seeing the contest stories through a consistent set of eyes (not that I agreed with most of your criteria ... it's still been interesting) and there have been some obvious hot topics brought up as a result. Just keep the personal and petty attacks out of it, please ... it reflects badly upon you (and anyone else who decides to take a kick at the can).

If you take a closer look at the reviews you've quoted, each one appears to speak specifically about the story itself, pointing out strengths. I can pretty well match the comments to the stories based on them. It's a different kind of feedback than you were doing in your thread, but it is no less valid. Authors commenting on authors is kind of a quid pro quo .. it's support and validation. I believe that most authors subscribe to the belief that constructive feedback... pointing out weakness or flaws ... are better done in a more private venue.

BTW .... here's the review thread: https://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=428901. It's stickied to the top of the AH page and rotates amonst seven reviewers.

I'm only posting this because early in this thread I came up against the way some authors here were reacting to it. I am not sorry I did so, I still believe all I defended then, and will continue to say it in the future when similar situations arise.

That being said, I am sorry my comments made their appearance in this particular thread, and I wish I could disassociate myself from Scouries.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and a writer revolting him- or herself against negative comments is only wasting time and energy that should be directed elsewhere. That goes double when the comments are made by someone with perspective of what constitutes writing as inconsequential as demonstrated by Scouries in this thread. To judge the value of a literary text by absolute length, regardless of the quality, appropriateness, and even reader satisfaction throughout; by indexation category, regardless of actual theme or quality of the text; by the use or not of previously released characters or universe, regardless of quality, appropriateness, or capability of the piece to stand alone; result in such a completely absurd set of criteria as to render opinions based on them discardable by any self-respecting author. What is left is a rating system based on the lowest common denominator, where the value of a literary piece is gauged by how many people read it, instead of by the intrinsic quality of the text. By that measure, think of what books would currently be considered the epitome of literature and laugh out loud - instead of the "formulaic incest stories that garner huge vote totals and guarantee that red H" Selena mentioned, read "formulaic whatever-hype-is-selling-now that garner huge publicity and hordes of acritical summer-readers. The fact that Scouries cannot conceive the existence of authors to whom whoring themselves for votes is not only personally demeaning but inconsequential to the quality of the stories at hand should be a hint.

Um Lauren....would you mind using laymen's language for those of us with just a shred less intelligence? :p

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but when it comes from an obvious idiot - and I don't mean that in a character-attacking way, just as a degree of intelligence - you're better off ignoring it than trying to contest it. ;)

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.

(edited to add) It isn't worth it to get bothered by this thread or this person. We know he will not change, so we shouldn't beat our heads against the wall attempting to make it so.

The only thing I could add to this, is beside the "Look at me" atmosphere of this thread, wouldn't your time have been better placed in writing an entry for the contest so that others could give you a fair critique? I appreciate some of what you said in some of the your comments, but the back biting and nastiness of the thread is what puts some people off about coming to the AH.

ETA: Selena writes because she loves writing. I enjoy most of her stories, and that is what this site is for, to post our work for others to enjoy. She also takes a lot of time to read and review and to put positive comments out for others, which we all know we all enjoy. I have to give her credit for being as prolific and for being so good at what she does. Also, I wrote three stories for the Valentine Contest and wasn't able to compete, should I be ashamed of those entries?

When a guy who can't be bothered to read an entire story before commenting on it, who can't be bothered to spell a username or a character's name correctly, who can't be bothered to use a punctuation better than that of a 10 year old, and who can't be bothered to present more profound reasons for his dislike of certain stories than his own narrow-minded definition of a theme, has the utter gall to attack someone else's reviews or comments without stipulating as to WHY he doesn't agree with them, I have to laughingly dismiss his views from any future credibility.

I have gotten his measure, this scouries fellow, and I'm not impressed. While I don't always agree with SK on every issue or philosophical point, I find her critical thinking and reviewing processes to be more serious and lucid than those used by someone like scouries. In other words, she's a grown-up. What's more, I actually like her. I've seen no reason to like scouries. He seems to belong to the J. Evans Pritchard school of rating erotica/smut. In other words, there is an attempt to be mathematically precise and tediously mechanical about his evaluation of stories. Evidently, however, this only includes being "on theme" or something like that. It doesn't seem to extend to even the rules of grammar or spelling.

There's room for his kind of taste in smut. There is also room for mine and SK's. However, I do not expect to really have any common ground with him. We're talking past each other. It's as if we are speaking different languages. If this is his idea of a rebellion against the official contest ratings, I'll just have to stick with the Establishment as the lesser evil.

Never having known him before, I am now aware of what he is about. He wants mediocrity to be the standard. I want something else. So be it. I don't believe that we have anything to say to each other. I like what I like, and he likes what he does. I'll follow my own judgment as to quality and continue to appreciate people like SK, who actually seem to possess some maturity and sense. If his intention was to make her silly by quoting her comments, the effect was precisely the opposite. It's almost comical, except for the hurtful comments that he made to her. If anyone is undeserving of such vicious remarks, it's Selena. He might take a lesson from her. She's critical in a friendly and helpful way, and she only bothers with such help if she thinks that you have potential in the first place.

I think that I need to quit writing in this thread, before I lose my lunch.

Hmmm

I am not going to comment on the angst this thread has given some of you. I will only comment on what was written about my story. Thank you for taking the time in reading it Scouries. I appreciate your review, and although the story is not your cup of clam chowder (chowda for you New Englanders), it is fine with me you expressed your thoughts on it. If you have another agenda, I don't really care, because it is the way of the world. If I could make peace with everyone I would, but such is life. I appreciated the other reviews on the Author's page, as I do the people that read, vote and send me feedback.

I will be honest and say I do not often read people's stories on here. I began writing for myself because in my mind I was writing something that interested me. I like to take an idea, plant the seed and watch it grow. Nevertheless, I love to hear positively or negatively from my readers. It is what keeps me writing, and eventhough I haven't written much, I still get fan mail.

I don't mind the bad review, but just like anything in life we all have different tastes. Whether it be music, movies, condiments on a cheeseburger, scents, or the feel of material against the skin, we all have differences in opinions. I respect yours Scouries, and I hope you will respect the opinions of others who have so strongly opposed yours. Peace, love and smoothies to all.

I got to tell you sack, I’m not going to spend a lot of time describing mens underwear.
You caution, “Don't forget ……who you are writing for.” I’m not writing for someone who wants to read 3 literotica pages of someone undressing. Surely you don’t believe this is even remotely representative of the literotica reader. I start to get complaints when one of my stories goes over 2 pages

All that tells me, is that your specific readers, have a very short attention span, and are simply looking for a quick fix. And you pander to them, rather than use your 'skill' to produce works of quality.

Most of the better stories on this site, go on to 3,4, 5, 6, or more pages. If they are well written, and the storyline holds one's attention, its not a chore to read more than two pages of skilled and talented production.

I defended your right, earlier, to express your opinions and votes on the stories, just like anyone else.

I still defend that right, but unfortunately after reading your later posts, I now think, you're just a spiteful, jealous, vote-whore and malicious arsehole.

*doffing cap*
G'day to you.

M and M

Motivation (hidden agendas and childishness) and Methodology(length of stories, sex, category) – those are the two complaints I’ve heard continually from those who’ve responded to this thread. Never ‘I agree with what you said about story 23’, or ‘Even though you didn’t, I liked story 45 and here’s why’, or ‘you gave story 6 too high a score, I think…’.

I think it scares you.

I became the issue, but reading the thread and the hostility that almost immediately arose among several of you, it’s obvious I was simply the catalyst that brought long simmering angers and dislikes to the surface.

The Authors Hangout clearly isn’t the happy place it’s made out to be. It’s a place where a group of intelligent and competitive people have smugly gathered. Behind the arrogant belief that they are somehow superior to not only the readers who come here (which is your greatest fault), but also the majority of the sites authors, lies a sad insecurity. Because most of you would prefer to be somewhere else. Published. Read by people you consider your peers.

Why do you stay? Like all authors You Crave Readers! and you can’t get this quantity of readers anywhere else. You can talk to your friends (and competitors) in the AH and pretend you’re in some intellectual, academic community and try to forget that you’re sitting dead center in a pornographic site. It perhaps explains your anger, your almost immediate rejection, when one of your members questions any of the group ethos.

Almost any questioning of the quality of one of your stories brings the group might to bear (even if you privately agree with some of the comments and sadly, spitefully also derive some enjoyment from them).

~~~~~~
As to the red ‘H’ that first SK so disdainfully referred to, and then Lauren echoed, as "formulaic incest stories that garner huge vote totals and guarantee that red H" - c’mon girls! At least try to be honest! If there is one thing I can say with total confidence it is that every author wants a red ‘H’ next to their story. Anyone who denies this is an out and out liar!
Actually the easiest way to get a red ‘H’ isn’t to garner huge vote totals – as you all know it only takes 10 votes (5 - 5’s and 5 - 4’s will do) to get one. In fact, if you want a red ‘H’ your best bet is to write a ‘Romance’ category story.
For those not believing this statement simply go to the Romance Top List report. The 500th most highly rated story has a 4.83 rating (which is higher than the 500th rated story in any other category even though many categories have many more total stories entered). Only 10 of the 500 have received more than 300 votes while the huge majority has fewer than 100. So to be more factual, your above statement should be changed to read as follows: “formulaic romance stories that get few votes and reads and guarantee that red H”
And why doesn’t anyone in AH like Sarahhh? Surely it’s not just jealousy? What’s the story here?
Awarding of prizes soon and then I will gladly leave you for a good long while…
